Would appear you have to continue to hold the key
& keep the ignition switch in some position to keep
the motor running !

So you know what to do
You know what item is related to the problem

The ignition switch is worn or out of adjustment

Or some other issue

Can not guess any farther for you
without more info

Could be a problem with the key switch or a relay. You can check the ignition and fuel pump circuits with a meter and see if you are loosing power from the key switch when you let go of the key.

SOURCE: 96 Jeep Cherokee WON'T start

i just had the same exact problems as zeeladys. It was the crank sensor shorting out and causing the short to shut down circuits in the pcm, volt gauge, fuel gauge, no spark. Locate the connector to the crank sensor, it runs beside the distributor, with the key to the on position unplug the connector and see if the gauges come back on. If so, simply replace the crank sensor and ur off and running

SOURCE: 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee will start then turn off

Replace the key Im the forman for a jeep dealership. The dealer should have told you that in the first place. there is no reason the key would unprogram itself unless the chip is intermitently shorting out. If you have another key start it if it stay running u know the key is at fault. hope this helps u out.

Having trouble starting my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country. It started fine this morning switched it to 4 wheel drive full time and it only read it was in part time on my dash. Waited for it to respond and...

CRANKS BUT NO START>!
is this car in USA< on this USA forum or elsewhere?
tossing coin now, lands..
USA 96 XJ jeeps. guess 4Liters. inline 6.
what engine is there we cant GUESS engine yet,we dumbbbbb
its not 4wd caused. !!! or transmission caused !!!
cranks but does not start.
has many causes, fuses tops list on all cars made and 10x with EFI.
what matters in now , all cars ran before, now matters, only.
USA answers for GAS engines not diesel.

1: got spark, my guess is no, but this is next.
2: the dashcluster , key on does CEL glow? if not, fuses are blown.
CEL means check engine lamp. it must glow, key on.

3: then SKIM lamp if car has security, feature it must glow then go out and not flash, nor stay one while cranking, if it does key secuity.
i think only Europe had this in 1996 , not USA>
aka: VTA,VTSS,SKIM and SKIL (or in English IMMO LAMP)
as in immobilized, if in uSA its not there. best guess..
the 2second rules applies to all jeeps.
on usa cars, the ASD relay
It may fail to energize if yes, fails, then spark is ended.
the ASD relay pulls in (energizes) and you crank
then the ASD drops before engine starts or runs for 2seconds and stop, if YES< that means the PCM (ecu) did that on purpose
and only SCANNING the PCM with any scan tool ever made
1996 to now, USA, works.
all do. scan it. see DTC errors, bingo why ASD drops
there are 7 reasons for the DROP and all show a DTC error.

My 96 jeep shuts off in traffic and at stop lights

This sounds like a bad idle air control valve, but also make sure the throtlebody is clean, use a toothbrush and some throtlebody cleaner, spray and clean with brush, make sure to open plate by having someone hold gas pedal to floor, after cleaning if truck still stalls then replace the idle air control valve,

Hi I have a 96 jeep cherokee country. It will start, I will drive it a distance, can be short or long, then shut it off. When I go to start it again, it won't start. After it sits for a while sometimes...

It sounds like your starter. Sometimes when starters get old the armature and/or field windings swell when they get hot. The reason is rather complex but I can tell you this is the most likely problem and the only fix is to replace the starter.

1996 Jeep Country Wagon. Replaced fuel filter and

does your jeep run rough? idle is real low? and when you are driving and push the gas hard it doesnt want to move? if so it is most likely the mass air flow sensor. i had to replace that 2 or 3 times on my 1999 jeep cherokee

96 cherokee key starts car but when you let go of key car stops

Check the ignition switch for proper adjustment and operation. Switch is above the column (attached to it) under the dash...sometimes easier to reach if you drop the column. (don't remove it, just take out the bolts that hold it to the dash)

I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee that won't hold a start

check your starter wire as mine was loose and did the same thing every time you interupt power to the alarm system it will flash the lights unlock the drivers door with the key and this will rearm the alarm and the jeep should start up if this is the problem rember to have good battery conections and a good batt first or else this will keep hapening also after 20 starts you may have to do the key thing again

My 96' Jeep Cherokee will not turn over or start

ASE Mechanic here. check all the fuses to start, and check voltage on battery. if there was a battery draw all night the vehicle might have started but the alternator could not charge the battery because its power was too low and causing the ignition to die and then not allowing the vehicle to start. keep me posted!!!!!!!!!!!
