When shifting from drive to park, ignition tries to engage, when applying the brake
SOURCE: Shifting in drive from park position
that means the pin that the knob presses down is stuck on something. if you take the shifting panel off it showes everything. then there will be a plastic guide. see what the pin is sticking on and there you are.

check the wiring at the trunk hinge they have the tendicy to frey and short out
SOURCE: my 1994 carolla will not shift out of park.
There is a solenoid located under the shifter housing that releases the shifter lock once the break is pressed. One of two three things has likely happened. One, there is gunk or syrup on the solenoid from spilled coffee or soda on it and it needs to be cleaned with alcohol. Two, the solenoid is bad and needs to be replaced. Three, the linkage has popped off or broke and needs to be repaired.
You can override the switch if you need to.
You will need to take the housing off around the shifter and find the solenoid. There is usually a manual override switch that you can push to get it to release. Sometimes it is an off color like pink or red.
SOURCE: Toyota Tacoma 1995. Manual transmission will not shift
the transmission might be rusted on the inside. this happened with my saturn SC2. i just bought a new transmission at a junkyard to fix the issue. there might not be a way to fix the transmission. sorry
NOTE: Your vehicle is equipped with a
brake-shift interlock feature. This
feature prevents you from shifting
from P (Park) unless you have the
brake pedal depressed. (The ignition
must be in the ON position.) If you
cannot shift from P (Park) with the
brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Remove the key.
3. Insert the key and rotate one position
clockwise (ignition in the OFF position).
4. Apply the brake pedal and shift to N
(Neutral). (If the vehicle is shifted to P
(Park), you must repeat the previous steps.)
5. Start the vehicle.
If you need to shift out of P (Park) by using the
alternate procedure described above, it is
possible that a fuse has blown and that your
brakelamps may also not be functional.
WARNING
DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL
YOU VERIFY THAT THE BRAKELAMPS
ARE WORKING.
check fuse 13 based on the attached diagram.
If this fuse is bad replace it. If it is not bad, blows again, or continues to be stuck in park then you need a new brake interlock switch that can be found on the brake pedal up underneath the dash.

Hi Trish Arruda, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
The car starts and runs just fine, the only problem is what i already described.
What you say is not clear, what do you mean ignition tries to engage, please add more details to that statement.
