I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer, the car is constantly overheating at least once a week, no visible signs of a leak. the thermostat has been replaced and the car has been taken to 6 different mechanics including a ford dealership that replaced all of the wiring. I am still having this problem, as well as the problem of car thinking the door is open.
If it has a viscous fan hub --replace it
if it has electric fans , check/ replace the coolant temperature sensor , fan relays or fan motors
have a compression test done to check for gasket or cracked head/s
over heating once a week is not constant so have the fault codes read to check for heated oxygen sensor problems altering the air / fuel mixture

go to an advance or auto zone parts store if they are more they will price match
SOURCE: Code for keyless entry on door?
THE CODE IS A PAPER TAG ON THE KEYLESS ENTRY MODULE, THIS MODULE IS LOCATED BEHIND THE LARGE TRIM PANEL ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE CARGO AREA. THERE IS NO GENERIC CODE. MY BACKGROUND IS: 10 YEAR FORD FACTORY CERTIFIED ELECTRONICS MASTER TECHNICIAN.
SOURCE: how to reset the air bag sign staying lit on the
Usually disconnecting the battery for anywhere from 10 - 30 mins resets any codes stored in memory.
Sometimes however it is a specific amount of "key cycling" that is required. eg: Turn key on, then off, then on for X seconds, then off for X seconds, then start engine etc. etc. etc.
If you have disconnected the battery, and there are no codes present but the light still comes on, there could be an issue with your airbag system. Wiring, or something was not done right.
WARNING : If you intend to work on the airbag yourself remember to disconnect battery for at least 45 mins. The air bag requires approx. 20-60 mins (depending on the vehicle, make and model and year) to discharge. If you do not do this you risk deploying the air bag, and that could ****!

Before you do this you might want to try fresh gear lube. On Ford products they use a synthetic additive in the rear and not in the front 4x4 axle.
The next thing would be to determine if it is a wheel bearing or a pinion bearing. You have to pull the axles and eliminate them as the problem. You might get lucky and not need to do the pinion.
The technical part of shimming the pinion gears with replacing the pinion bearing is about the worst part of the job. You won't know about the gears until you see them. You will need extra shims on hand.
It is a moderate job for two people. If you have all the parts it can be done in a day.

Here's a step by step, with photos, on how to replace an Explorer fuel filter. The Mountaineer should be exactly the same. The problem you describe can be attributed to the fuel filter. Good luck.
