Your vehicle is equipped with an inter- lock. Therefore, the ignition key cannot be turned to position 0 and removed until the selector lever is in position "P" (Interlock).

Very common on BMW's just the same as mine in fact, it done this only sometimes then all the time and then one day it wouldnt start at all. 2 things you can do for now just to get you moving.
Remove the key put the steering lock on then put the key in and turn the steering this will normally give you enough grip to start the car on occassion. sprasy inside the ignition where the key sits with WD-40 again this is a temp fix but will get you going.
The ignition barrel will need replacing in the end though. you can do this your self it's not to difficult to do. you still retain the original key but you need to remove the black shroud from around the outside of the barrel
remove lower dash and or steering column covers. follow directly back from where the ignition cylinder is and the igntion switch is usually two bolts remove and replace in the opposite manner.
Hi , you can initialise the key yourself. Ensure you get into the car and close all doors, Insert the ignition key and turn on the ignition lights , do not start the engine, while the key is still in the ignition press and hold the lock button and remove the key from the ignition , while still holding down the lock button press the unlock button 3 times and release the lock button, the central locking should now lock and unlock, to initiate other keys just hold the lock button and press the unlock 3 times , you do not have to insert the other key into the ignition , you may need to practise this a few times , hope this helps, regards mark .
hi, to program the keys to the vehicle is quite simple
1) open the vehicle, sit inside and close the door
2) insert the key in the ignition and turn to position 1 so that just the air bag light illuminates
3) press and hold the unlock button on the key and remove the key from the ignition (do not release the unlock button)
4) while still holding the unlock button with the key removed press the lock button 3 times
5) release the unlock button on the remote and the door locks should lock and unlock if the proceedure has been carried out correctly
6) to program any other key(s) press and hold the unlock button on remote and again press the lock button 3 times but do not insert it into the ignition or turn the ignition on as done previous.
you may want to print these instructions and read them a few times before proceeding, if you muck up the process while programing keys, no harm will be done, you just have to start the process over. hope this is of some help, regards mark.
hi markjones, the ignition switch can usually be removed without too much disassembly. First you will need to remove a plastic screw in the upper and lower trim covers. Seperate the covers. You should see a black plastic ring around the mechanical switch. gentley remove the ring. Next remove the rubber o-ring/band. With the key in the iginition and turned to almost to position 1, insert a heavy duty paper clip, or bmw special tool (about $30 from the dealer) into the small hole in the switch. There is a cam in the hole that needs to be twisted clockwise so the cylinder can be removed. When installing a new switch make sure to remove the little tab pice of metal that usually breaks off in the housing. Also be sure to make sure and reinstall the rubber ring/band because they are part of the ews system. If you key turns continuously, or is not able to be removed, the ignition housing and cylinder both will need replaced. Replacing the lock housing is about a 2 hour sequence and can be challenging. I would recommend a shop for that kind of repair.
Sounds like a stuck ignition relay. Try tapping with something ******* the ignition switch when this happens, see if it helps. If it does consider replacing the ignition switch.
