Ever notice that while driving that the car hesitates or refuses to go into gear? ... but after shifting into gear the engine's RPMs will surge, but the car won't move as fast as the ..... It's slow to shift gears and accelerate in Reverse, D4,D3,2 and 1.
no not related in the transmisson the is a forlk that moves in and out when you pull the gear shifter toward you that allows you to move from each gear as you release the gear shift the forlk is released and this is what keeps the car in a certain gear, then this becomes miss lined the gear indacator will be off usually by one gear.( eample selctor shows D but its actually in N) the forlk is held in place by a screw with a sleve and when the sleve cracks or breaks the forlk will get stuck or locked so you can't move from gear to gear unfortunitly this is internal of the transmisson and not a back yard repair
your transmission is slipping when its cold. when it warms up the parts inside expand and take up the slack that's caused by the clutches and bands inside being worn. start by checking the trans. fluid level and condition. if it's low, add fluid. if it's brown or black or sparkly, your transmission is junk and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
check the oil lever in the transmisson assuming it's automatic, if the fluid level is fine then with it in gear running and the brake on look to see if the drive shaft is turning, if it is then you have a prboblem with the drive shavft depending on engine size and wheather it's front or rear wheel drive. if it's not turning then you have a transmisson problem. If this is helpful please rate.
check to see if the shift cable free, frist i would disconnect the cable at the trans please make sure you have the wheels chocked up . with the cable disconnected move the shifterif it moves freely go to where you disconnected at the trans and see if you can move the shifter arm if you can the cable has most likley failed. our the shift tube has failed on the columen has failed good luck
