SOURCE: VW PASSAT 03 V6. EPC AND TRACTION LIGHT COME ON INTERMITTANTLY.

First, to read VW codes you will want to get yourself a $50 VAG tool. It will read all your systems, not just the ECU.
Electronic Power Control can go out for several reasons. Check your brake lights with the car running. Check you radiator fluid level. If the car is running bad, you could have bad spark plugs/ wires or ignition coil.
The traction control is tied into the ABS system and often causes problems here as well. Each wheel has a speed sensor and magnet wheel in the hub. You can check these for damage by removing the tires for access. The sensors come out by hand, and inside the hole they come out of is the place to check the magnets with a flash light. Apply a small amount of wheel bearing grease to the sensor.
The control unit goes out in these systems at an alarming rate. They can be easily removed, and repaired for under $200 at modulemaster.com
Since it is intermit, I suspect most likely a loose sensor, or electrical connector.
If your brakes feel squishy at all, bleed the brake lines of air and contaminants.
Good Luck!

I have a 2003vw jetta the epc light is on and the will not come out of park nor the stop lights come on,I have already changed the brake switch and still won't work..

EPC light should have nothing to do with the shift interlock,(EPC is traction control) should be a small cap or plug on the console, near the shifter that has the interlock disengage button, usually done with a key, check shift interlock in the owners manual.

I have a 2002 vw gti golf with a 1.8T engine. We had it stall out on us at a stoplight so we took it in and they replaced the vacuum lines and said the problem was fixed. It's not it continues to stall...

simple test
start the engine and let idle
if idles ok , then put you foot on the brake
if it stalls ---replace the faulty brake booster
as with all faults in a cars
have the fault codes read first to avoid unnecessary waste of time and cash

ETC light is on, engine has problems starting.

The EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) is the "fly by wire" system that controls the throttle, it took the place of the cable that went from the gas pedal to the throttle body on VW. If this light is on and there is also a P0102, MAF (Mass Air Flow) related code stored in the vehicle's computer, the EPC may be caused indirectly from a faulty MAF. If the EPC is on and there is no other codes stored, it could be a faulty electronic throttle body or need to be re-programmed. The vehicle's computer must recognoze the throttle body so when replacing it with new or used it will need to be programmed at the dealer. Recently I replaced a MAF (a common problem on VW's) on a VW Golf and when I cleared the code the EPC went off as well.

Have a 2001 vw beetle and a check engine code is t1582

17990/P1582/005506 - Idle Adaptation Limit Reached Possible Solutions
  • Check Fuel Pressure
  • Check Intake System for Leaks (False Air)
  • Check Fuel Injector(s)
  • Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
  • Check Exhaust System for Leaks
  • Check Secondary Air Injection (AIR) for Leaks
  • Check Vacuum Lines for Leaks
  • Check Throttle Body
Special Notes
  • It may be necessary to remove and clean the Throttle Body and perform a Throttle Body Alignment (TBA)
  • When this fault is stored in the early VW models with the 2.8L VR6 (AAA) and the 2.0L (ABA), it may be necessary to drive the vehicle for a few days for the idle to return to normal after removing and cleaning the Throttle Body.

EPC Light on , VW dies when stopping

Tell him to clean the electrical connector at the throttle body with 90% rubbing alcohol. He may want to use a nylon brush on the contact pins while cleaning. I'm pretty sure the car needs a throttle adaptation performed also. Find a shop with a Vag Com scanner, they can do it for you.

Check the engine codes, and replace or repair the faulty sensor (most likely the MAF sensor).
