This is a 'limp home mode' and is engaged if a fault is detected that may result in damage to the engine if allowed to go unchecked. Take the vehicle to a dealer or Autozone and get a read out of the stored error codes from the on-board diagnostics module as this will help define the exact nature of the fault.

There is an electric motor that switches the transfercase from 2 to 4 wd. They are bad about sticking. Sometimes you can reset them by disconnecting the negative battery post for a few minutes. If that doesn't work carry it to the dealer. They will find the problem quicker than a regular shop.

THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR IS NOT WORKING TO INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. CHECK WITH DOOR OPEN WHEN YOU PUSH 4 WHEEL SWITCH YOU SHOULD HEAR MOTOR INGAGE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. IF YOU HEAR MOTOR BUT STILL NO 4 WHEEL DRIVE THE GEAR ON MOTOR COULD BE DAMAGED. REPLACE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR.
