SOURCE: RACK AND PINON DODGE RAM 1500 2005

if you have a leak from the back of the rack your sector shaft seal is defective. to replace it you need to remove the rack and do it on the bench.remove the locking nut and pull the seal from inside.if you are a rooky replace the rack with a rebuild one. good luck.

SOURCE: how do i remove and replace the rack and pinion

You may very well not be able to do this job unless you have a lift. You're going to have to remove the lines that hide up on top and under other crossing lines. Plus the bolts that actually mount the rack are about an inch in diameter if not more and they are fine thread. I think it would be to your best advantage to have this done at a shop by a proffesional. It will save you a lot of grey hairs in the future.

SOURCE: 2005 dodge caravan, leaking power steering

I really wouldn't push it more than 3 months or especially if climate change once the leak stop has stopped the leak it doesn't like temp change. but i've done radiator stop leak from Lucas and went 6 months before the leak appeared again. good luck

Reasons for "play" in a steering wheel. I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 club cab and can turn my wheel almost 2" without the wheels turning. I had it looked at from a local garage and they found a broken sway...

Could be more worn steering parts such as the pitman or idler arm. IIRC, the 98 Ram has a steering gear box, and not rack and pinion steering like newer models.

If the issue is not up front under the hood, you could also have a worn intermediate (sometimes called a sector shaft) . This shaft goes between the steering column and the gear box or rack and pinion.

2001 dodge grand caravan no power steering assist I have replaced power steering pump and flushed system

The rack and pinion unit is probally bad. There are internal seals inside that hold the pressure, created by the pump, to turn the wheels, these seals maybe worn, or other internal parts are bad inside.

Leaking power steerring fluid. Garage said replace

thats about right, but a 2005 needing a rack, it is possible but i would get a second garage to look , take it somewhere else, dont tell them you were told it needs a rack, just tell them you have a p/s leak. this way you have two estimates and you will know for sure its the rack.hope this helps.
