The code is for a large leak in the EVAP system such as a loose or missing gas cap. But it could also mean a loose or missing hose to the canister or other leak in the tank. The computer vents the tank several times an hour while the engine is running, and it checks the system by pressurizing the gas tank. If the tank will not hold pressure the code is set. You may have to check the top of the tank where the fuel pump gasket is, as well as the vent lines to the front of the car. A mechanic would perform a smoke test to look for leaks.
need scanner light comes on for reason thats what the codes are for they help see whats caused the fault to turn on light and it can be anything loose gas cap bad o2 sensor missfire 90% is loose gas cap rule of thumb if the way it drives does not change dont panic, if engine shakes n shudders get checked quick if fuel mileage is suffering get it checked n fixed soon burnin money!!
Most of the time this happens, it is due to a loose fuel cap. The system senses that the tank is not pressurized and send a fault as if th cap is missing. Ensure the cap is on tight and allow for a few days to let the system reset itself. Other that that, most check engine light fault are due to failed or failing components in the Emmissions...these include EGR valves, PVC valve, and O2 sensors. If you are not experiencing less that optimum fuel economy, you may just have a bad seal at the fuel cap. I hope this information helps narrow down the problem.
A loose or worn out gas cap can cause the check engine light to activate too.
Don't panic, it sometimes takes several days for the light to shut off, just make sure the cap is tight.
Hi:
The check fuel cap light is tripped when your cap has been loose or off, and the engine is running. Often you need to have the light reset by a code scanner. If you have checked the cap and it is secure, if you reset the code and it comes back, you possibly need a new gas cap.
Check fuel cap light will not immediatly go out upon replacement of the fuel cap. Might take several days. You could go to a local autoparts store and have them read the trouble code (for check engine light) and reset it. If it was indeed the fuel cap the light should stay off after resetting it. Most autoparts stores do not charge a fee to do this.
It is coming, because the fuel tank has more oxygen when you left it open. Take your car to autozone or napa, they can reset the code for you for free. Let me know
