What does the white arrow below the temp gauge on a 2001 saturn SL mean

With a stick shift, the red arrow indicates it is (long over-due) time to shift to the next higher gear. I shift at about 1300-1400 (when the engine just starts to "pull") and get 39 to 42 mpg during the summer months, and 36-39 during winter. This is all - round driving.. not just highway. Just pretend your most sensitive body part is between your foot and the gas pedal, and you will be amazed the mileage these cars can get. You should be in 5th gear by 30 mph.. By the way, my car has the original clutch with 195000 miles on the clock. No brag, just fact.

The first thing that I would do is to hook the vehicle up to a scan tool and see if maybe you can figure out what is going on with it that way. The computer might be trying to tell you something and it may not have put out a trouble code.

check for leaks on master cylinder if you haft to add brake fluid its definately leaking,throw out bearing maybe going out?may of glazed pressure plate? good luck!!
