2003 Jeep Wrangler, the automatic shifter is locked and the key will not come out of the ignition. Any ideas?

sure, battery under hood charged,
head lights work> y/n ???????
fuses good.

shift locked in park you mean?
do the brake lights work,
this is called the park lock out. system. (simple)
it keeps car from moving when started in gear.

on this car the PCM logic controls this.
brake lights glowing
the PCM senses the park switch on the transmission
if in park (or neutral) the PCM then energizes the
lock solenoid on the shifter.
or the solenoid is jammed.
check those brakes first. and its fuse. if blown.

1995 chevy tahoe

Sounds like the shifter lock out system has a problem. There is a solenoid that will not allow the shifter to move out of park until the brake pedal is pressed. There is a switch that closes when you step on the brakes that allows the solenoid to disengage and the shifter to move. Check your fuses first. If not a fuse you need a wiring diagram and a volt meter to test.

Key stuck in the ignitin of a 2005 grand prix

Check to be sure your shift lever is all the way in the Park position. Move it up and down several times to be sure. If that doesn't work shift into neutral then move steering wheel side-to-side to be sure it isn't locked under tension. Place shifter back into Park position. If that doesn't work check all your fuses. There is a small safety switch located under the shifter boot. It is there to prevent the car from starting when not in Park. A blown fuse can cause it to stop working. If all else fails, remove boot and manually press this switch. If key comes out then that's your problem. Good luck.

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

The shifter will not come out of park position. is this a linkage or electrical problem?

get someone to see if the brake lights are coming on when the pedal is pushed and if they are not working check the stop light fuse and if the fuse is good the stop light switch is the most likely cause and it is a common problem.if all of this is ok then i would next check the shift lock solenoid to see if any liquids have been spilled onto it and making it sticky and stick and not letting the arm move.i have also seen but once in a blue moon that somehow the shifter get bent and the rod that is at the bottom of the shifter will not let the solenoid move it will either not lock in park and let you take the key out of the ignition or will just do what it is doing now.............good luck and i hope this is helpful just let me know............if i can help you any further let me know and give more vehicle info and how and when it started....

My shift lever is stuck in park, no matter what I do I can't release it from park. Any ideas?

if the shifter is on the floor there is a little piece of plastic covering a small hole to disengage the emergency shift lock solenoid.Take a small object like a paper clip and press down in that hole and this should unlock it for now.THe main cause of this is a faulty shift interlock control solenoid.good luck and i hope this helps

Have a 1997 ford thunderbird lx....v-6...3.8...it is stuck in park, cannot shift out of park...is there a shift-lock override button on this model? the fuses all check out o.k., but the button that needs...

no override button. if all the fuses are good, then if i remember there is a switch by the shift lever that when you step on the brake it enables you to move the shifter.good luck
