One simple thing it could be is that with all wheel drive's it's critical that the owner keep all the same model and size tire on all four corner's and this is the tough one they gotta have the same (and correct) air pressure in them, the sensors for the power split for AWD does not cope well with these simple things not all the same and will cause what i have Knick named " Chuckwaggoning" as it feels as your car is now a wooden wagon on the oregon trail if you have it . other than that ck for fault codes in ecm with code checker it might tell you a wheel sensor is faulted .

SOURCE: How do you access the spark plugs 2002 mercury mountaineer

IIRC these are a coil over design. meaning the coil is over the plug. the coil should have one 8mm bolt holding it on the lower intake manifold. remove the coild to get to the spark plugs. look by the fuel injectors, coil should be just next to it or very close. coil usually says motorcraft on it and circle in design.

good luck

SOURCE: 2002 mercury mountaineer 4.0 starter relay location

The power distribution box is
located in the engine compartment.
The power distribution box contains
high-current fuses that protect your
vehicle’s main electrical systems
from overloads.
The starter relay is in position #56 of that box.

SOURCE: 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, heater/AC fan no longer blowing

I would check the fan first disconnect the electrical connectors on it and use a pair of home made jumper cables and run it from the battery. If it works move unto relay if it doesn't you've found the culprit.
Next check relay in the fuse box. Coolant tempertant switch(CTS) aka thermal switch and its circuit. CTS is usually located in the water jacket by the t-stat.

SOURCE: Mercury mountaineer check engine light help

My 2002 M Mountaineer had the same problem and was fixed by reading the code that showed a leak in the gas tank pressure via the cap. When I replaced this with a good after market cap and drove the car for a while and it cleared itself. A mechanic told me that's not possible, but it did clear and has not lit up except on start up where it lights for a few seconds to test the bulb - a normal function.

Get to 40 mph and my a.w.d. mercury mountaineer just starts going all over the place have to slow down to control it

Make sure you don't have a blistered tire. Also make sure the tires are properly balanced. Lastly make sure there is not build up of dirt on the rims.

What could be causing the noise we hear when reaching 40 MPH on our 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, it sounds like when you are reaching a toll booth and the speed strips on the road warn you to slow down.

Sounds Like an Axle going bad or an axle Bearing, Where is the Noise ?
Front or Rear?
More noise on turns? or graded pavements?
IE:on ramps for highway/expressways?

I have a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer v8 and I want to know why when I am on the interstate at 60 mph or higher, my truck starts to roar.

Does it "roar" all the time? It could be the fan clutch engaging and the radiator fan spinning at full speed. Watch the temp gauge and the RPM's when it does this..the RPM's should stay the same and the temp gauge should go down. I would also check your coolant level as low coolant cause the engine to run hotter and at highway speed the water will circulate faster making the fan clutch engage due to the extra heat.

Transmission knocks at 20-30 mph and 40 mph, like it can't shift.

Well if you would elaborate some more on what kind of car you have,...that would be helpful as my ESP is very low today....
