How do i fix a switch for my reverse light in the boot of my manual transmission for a 1996 ford ranger?

Have you checked the reverse switch on the transmission? Fuse in the fuse box?

could be a vehicle speed sensor, Is your check engine light on since this problem arose, and could also be the speedo itself going bad.

find a better mechanic......any trans shop should be able to fix it. I hope you have not paid for the non-fix.

There is a switch that controls the Neutral Safety Switch, and the Back-Up lights with the automatic transmission.

Manual trans usually have a single switch mounted where the shift rail inside the trans causes a switch to turn on the Back-up lights when you shift into reverse. Just a Back-up switch @ 15.00 + Ship on eBay for this type.

It seems the reverse light switch which is fitted on the gear box has sized to 'on' position, the remedy is to replace the switch.
To male sure its the switch, locate it and remove the connection to the switch thn check it out if the reverse light stays 'on' whn you turn the igntion 'on'.

this sounds like a simple adjustment of shift linkage i guess i should ask if its a automatic transmission if so this is a great place to start..have a great day

Not sure what transmssion you have but basically it goes from fuse on P/O wire to either the MLP switch on automatic or just a backup lamp switch on manual and leaves the switch on BK/PK wire to the bulbs. Should be easy to trace with a 12v test light.

sorry these are famous in the feature you have only if you change the filter and fluid regular as recommended as suggested from factory for some reason that reverse band is famous in older models it could be adjusted! I know some of fords other models have a digital transmission!!! oh dear to those to!!!good luck hope this helped you
