I need to finish removing the tranny from an Escort in a Pic-A-Part yard. The axle nut is proving to be extremely difficult. I was told that it wasn't necessary to remove the cv axle, that - if it's loose from the a-arm & strut tower - I could just **** it out(driver's side) that the bands could be cut. Is this feasible? If not, how might I get the axle nut off?
Interesting challenge! if the axle nut is not rounded there are some powerful electric impact guns out there, the other side of the street, the transmission once unbolted and the axle pryed loose and there is enough room between sub frame and engine it will come out, automatic is easier but heavier... heat wrench would be nice (torch)
2 additional techniques. Breaker bar with a "cheater" to gain more leverage, if you're doing this you want a 3/4 inch bar - I bent a 1/2 inch cheater bar trying this method.
If you're at a pull-a-part and you're not wanting the axles/CVs or hubs, then just drop the front shocks, disconnect the the shock from the hub, completely slice open the outer CV boot then you can yank the axle out of the trans.

take a pry bar to the side of the tranny and pry the cv out, there is a clip on the shaft of the axle on the inside of the tranny

I am assuming you have disconnected the lower portion of the front suspension from the frame and separated the axle from the bearing assembly (where it goes through your front brake rotor).. if so.. using a small pry bar, insert it between the back of the axle were it enters the transmission, a little bit of pressure should allow the axle to come out.. remember to replace the oil seal before you insert the new axle

take wheel off take big nut off cv shaft so it can slide out of hub assembly, take bolt out that holds strut to hub assembly an bolt lower ball joint and tie rod end take hammer and tap knuckle where steering end attaches, pry out ball joint and take axle end out of hub assembly. then carefully with pry bar pop it out of tranny. when install cv axle push in tranny fast so that you feel it snap in. good luck
