Is it necessary to remove the cv axle to remove the transmission from a 2001 ford escort?

I need to finish removing the tranny from an Escort in a Pic-A-Part yard. The axle nut is proving to be extremely difficult. I was told that it wasn't necessary to remove the cv axle, that - if it's loose from the a-arm & strut tower - I could just **** it out(driver's side) that the bands could be cut. Is this feasible? If not, how might I get the axle nut off?

Interesting challenge! if the axle nut is not rounded there are some powerful electric impact guns out there, the other side of the street, the transmission once unbolted and the axle pryed loose and there is enough room between sub frame and engine it will come out, automatic is easier but heavier... heat wrench would be nice (torch)

2 additional techniques. Breaker bar with a "cheater" to gain more leverage, if you're doing this you want a 3/4 inch bar - I bent a 1/2 inch cheater bar trying this method.

If you're at a pull-a-part and you're not wanting the axles/CVs or hubs, then just drop the front shocks, disconnect the the shock from the hub, completely slice open the outer CV boot then you can yank the axle out of the trans.

SOURCE: I'm trying to remove a CV axle on a 94 Escort, but

I am assuming you have disconnected the lower portion of the front suspension from the frame and separated the axle from the bearing assembly (where it goes through your front brake rotor).. if so.. using a small pry bar, insert it between the back of the axle were it enters the transmission, a little bit of pressure should allow the axle to come out.. remember to replace the oil seal before you insert the new axle

I have a 94 ford escort and the front of the axle is out but the back of it is still attached to the transmission can't get a pry bar back in there

Depends on what you are trying to do and the model you are doing it to.

I have worked on a few ******* around that vintage but I don't remember any particular problems removing the front subframe. All ******* of each age share the same basic construction and layout but details differ depending on model, making a repair manual desirable though not necessary. I found most tasks fairly intuitive.

I suggest you take another look, using a strong light and a mirror if necessary.

Cant get driver side cv axle out on a 96 ford escort 1.9l

if you have taken the half axel off the wheel arm, then all it should take is a hard pull by hand to pop the half axel out of the transmission.

2000 Ford Escort, engine runs fine but the car will not drive

It really sounds like one of the cv joints has failed. Even though boots are intact joint could be broke inside-just double check.

Cv joint removal

CV joint removal involves taking the axle (half shaft) out. You will need to take the axle nut off and it will require a large breaker bar or an air impact gun as they are installed with LOTS of torque. Then you will have to seperate the lower control arm so that you can swing the wheel assembly out far enough to remove the axle. Once you have rmoved it from the wheel end, you can remove it from the transmission end,

Need to replace a front passenger cv axle shaft in my escort zx2 and i cant figure our how to do it

  1. Jack the car up
  2. Remove the wheel
  3. Loosen the axle nut at the center of the hub
  4. Remove the lower ball joint and tie rod from the hub. Disconnect the strut from the hub.
  5. As you're swinging the hub out of the way, tap the center of the axle stub with a hammer a few times to loosen it, then push it back out of the hub, toward the transmission.
  6. Insert a pry bar between the transmission and inboard CV stub, and gently pry outward in a couple places, until the axle pops out.
  7. Place a drain pan under the inboard stub, and remove it.
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal.
