SOURCE: oily spark plug, changed plugs now car smokes

You changed 6 coils, but you didn't change spark plugs? The new coils give strong spark to burn off resisdues from your old plugs plus what ever left inside the combustion due to bad old coils causing smoke and bad ordor. Change all new spark plugs so you can have good ignition to burn off all junks inside combustion chambers. Smokes are at the beginning, but it will go away after less than 10 minutes.
If it is not going away you may have other problemS:
Rich mixture causing engine check light come on.
Check if engine oil level.
Check if your coolant level.
Open the oil cap to see if you have milky stuff. If there is milky stuff then you have bad head gasket.
Let me know what is coming out so others can learn from your experience. Good luck.

SOURCE: 2002 nissan altima + black smoke coming out of tailpipe.

To begin with, check for fuel in engine oil and do a compression test. If fuel system is not functioning properly (running rich) that will point you in one direction (temp sender, pressure regulator , map or airflow sensor etc) If compression is low, you may have internal engine problem (burned piston, broken ring, or combination of fuel problem causing gas washed cylinders)

I have vapour / steam coming out of my oil dipstick tube on my 1.8 diesel Ford Galaxy, is this to do with a faulty / worn pcv unit. Would this also contribute to poor starting if the valve is faulty?

The PCV allows one way flow and vents pressure (gases) from the engine and sends them to the intake side of the air breather for re-introduction into the air intake system of the engine.
A non-working or stopped up PCV can cause a build up of pressure, which must vent somewhere. The oil dip stick is often the choice, especially if there is not a tight seal at the top of the tube.
White smoke or steam/ vapor usually means water is entering the internal workings of the engine. Head gasket leaks, cracked heads, and cracked blocks are the common source of such entry. Also water leaking into a cylinder will cause hard or poor starting as the piston is working against the volume displacement of the water. Upon cranking any water so leaking will be exited through the exhaust system and leave the vehicle as a white vapor out of the tailpipe.
Considering that most diesel engines have some "blow by", some water may be expelled out the PCV circuit.

If you are talking about something like a 60 or 90,000 it is possible that they used a injector cleaner which is sucked in throught he intake manifold. 1st, they should have used a manufacturer oil filter which will prevent the clicking from occuring(most manufacturers have some form of TSB regarding this issue). This is lack of oil pressure being retained to the hydraulic lifters(valve tap). Look at your invoice and make sure they used the proper oil weight. 2nd, if they did use some form of intake cleaner, they should have driven it around the block until the risidual cleaner has burned out. 3rd thing to check is whether or not a new kid was put on this project. If it was started without oil even for a moment, it is possible it has done internal engine damage and needs to be addressed with the service manager and possibly the GM. Don't wait on this issue until something big happens. With that receipt/invoice in your hands, this is a contract stating that they have addressed your concerns, performed all agreed upon work and that it was performed professionally and to manufacturers specificatons. Not to mention, to your satisfaction. Let me know if you need anything further.

Valve stem seals can cause this problem, but normally only when first started. Oil in the rocker cover seaps through the oil seals into the cylinders and is burnt up on start up.
Try a "STOP A LEAK" additive and it may reduce the oil consumption and smoke.
I found some on e-bay and it worked on my tired old escort. It even stopped the rattling tappets.

White smoke from the exhaust when I start the car

Hi!

What type of smoke can you see---

white smoke-
If you see a wispy, lingering white smoke that has a bittersweet smell, this is an indication that your car's engine coolant is leaking into the combustion chambers. This may be due to a leaky head gasket, or in a worst case scenario, a cracked cylinder head.

Make sure to take your car to the shop right away to get it fixed.
Thick white smoke---
If your vehicle is belching white smoke upon start-up, it is a sign that transmission fluid is entering the combustion chambers, possibly though a vacuum tube that connects the engine to the transmission.
This type of smoke can be confused with the normal puff of steam during start-up. If you are not sure, have your car inspected at the shop.

Blue/White Smoke--
A blue/white smoke is an indication that oil is being sucked into the combustion chambers through the valve guides. A quick fix for this problem is by replacing the valve seals. Valve seals are small, umbrella shaped pieces of rubber.

Do rate the solution.

Thanks
Rylee.
