SOURCE: How do I change the spark plugs on a BMW 523i

The spark plug change is very straight forward. Basically, you remove the plastic valve cover trim panel, unplug the harness plugs from each of the ignition coils, remove the two nuts securing each coil, pull the coil up. The rubber spark plug connector boot should come up with the coil. You can now remove the spark plugs.

The spark plugs are not gappable. Install them as they come out of the box.

Replace the rubber connector boots at the same time, these wear out and can cause miss-fire problems.

Note that if you find oil in the spark plug wells, the valve cover gaskets must be replaced. Not only does this make a mess, but it deteriorates the boots and also causes miss-fires.

See the DIY article in the Spring 2005 issue of the Bavarian Autosport - Fast Times newsletter (see link below):

Contact Bavarian Autosport for the spark plugs and connector boots (and valve cover gaskets) at 800-535-2002, or order online.

SOURCE: I've a problem with misfiring in # 5 cylinder -combustion failure

1. Swap two ignition coils between #5 cylinder and another one.
2. If the #5 cylinder misfire problem is still present you must check up wire by wire the electrical supply cable from the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the #5 ignition coil. Repair damaged wire(s). The last piece out of order will be the ECM !
3. Inspect also #5 spark plug if it is wet or dry. If it is dry then you must verify the #5 injector!

My car is misfiring what could be causing this problem and how do you fix it

Probably a coil or the connector that goes from the coil to the spark plug.. unplug one coil wire at a time and listen for RPM loss.. The cylinder with the least RPM drop off could be your problem. Change that coil to another cylinder .. see if the problem travels with it.. if it does you have found the problem..Remove the coils and check the connectors for cracks and carbon tracking.. if it does not travel check the spark plug. This is a large problem.. missing cylinders leads to bad cats.. a very very expensive problem.
