Our truck service 4 wheel drive light randomly appears and then disappears sometimes the 4 wheel drive works and sometimes it doesnt. today we were hauling a boat and went to downshift and 3rd gear did not catch, neither 2nd or 1st. we stopped put it into park and reverse and no gears were catching. we had to put the parking brake on. then we shut off restarted pressed 4H button and then everything clicked into gear again. very frusterating. do not have warranty on truck any suggestions.
Sounds like a bent fork in the transfer case. It is a common problem with your truck. The transfer case is a np236. If it just recently started doing this, the rebuild will cost around $800. If the 4wd has been acting up for a while, the planetary will probably need changed, which is another $200.
