How many hours to replace a power steering pump?

Just bought this car and it's steering is hard. The guy said he replaced the steering fluid reservoir, fluid is full, thinking the pump is gone. Your thoughts please? Start with the pump? The rack? How many hours should these things take a mechanic to fix? Thanks.

Since he replace the reservoir, most likely it is the pump. These pumps have fiberboard vanes, so don't worry about replacing the rack. I don't know about your car, but if the pump is on top, labor is about an hour. If it on bottom, look at about 3 hours. I have done some that have taken every bit of 3 hours, all the parts that have to removed or dropping the frame. Don't get me wrong, I have worked on plenty of Volvo,s. But I work on everything and just do the job.

If you replace the pump, you should also replace the Rack and Pinion as well because any metal particles from a bad pump will ruin the Rack. If you replace just the pump and your rack goes then your Pump will go out again as well.

SOURCE: power steering issue. Very noisy and makes steering difficult.

top it up and see how long it takes to go throguh the fluid.if it only lasts a few days you know its either the pump or one of the hoses.

Flushing is recommended. Have a look at the upper and lower couplings at the steering rod just before the steering rack which could be jammed.

SOURCE: 98 Volvo V70 GLT - Oil Pump or Valve Job?

Most common cause of ticking in these is the oil pick-up seals. Remove the pan and replace the oil pick-up tube seal, the two seals for the tube in the pan and the 2 O-rings on the right side of the pan. And dont use silicone to seal the pan back up, because it WILL leak, I highly recommend the Volvo sealant

My 03 kia optima whines @ idle and gets really loud if I turn left or right. Power steering is full, replaced the power steering pump, drained and refilled fluid w/lucas. And now it's actually louder.

take it to a power steering specialist shop
the noise is from a pressure relief valve that unloads the pump pressure when it is not required for steering( idling, steering straight ahead or not steering wheel movement to activate the control valves)
the valve is faulty or the spring for the valve is failing and getting weak

Debris in the fluid. Power Steering fluid probably needs flushed to get all the metal filings out from the pumps that have already been replaced. Any time a pump goes out it will leave a little metal behind in the oil. i believe there is filters to put on after flushing to catch any that remains. You should be able to get the filter at any parts store. Also might want to check the rack and pinion.

Power steering leak

replacing a line wouldnt be to hard, neither would replacing the whole pump, which is probably what you will have to do. If you checked it and it was dry then there has, more than likely been damage done to the pump. The biggest problem with your situation isn't really difficulty of the job but more the cost of replacement parts. I can't say for sure on your vehicle but pumps can get pretty pricey for some cars. Good luck on your fix.

94 Camry steering hard to turn like it has no power steering. It has the rack replaced and steering knuckle replaced

Does the power steering have fluid in it. Is the belt on the pump. With it running take the cap off of the pump and see if fluid is moving around. If u feel the steering knucle is to tight u can also take the tie rod off and see if it turns free. Also go back to who fixed it and say its not right, Make it right. Most garages give 12 month or 12.000 mile warranty.
