Current Mileage: 187,*** Recent Repairs: Headgasket & Thrmostat My 2001 Alero (2.4) won't start? Electricity is on, and it turns over, but won't fire. It started on the second out of six tries, but quickly sputtered out. Could I get a list or suggestions on where to start, or a reference to a good troubleshooting guide?
The most likely causes on the Alero are either a clogged fuel filter (which should be replaced every 30,000 miles in order to avoid damage to the fuel pump), or a weak or bad fuel pump. I'd start with replacing the fuel pump since it's the cheapest fix, the part costs about $20 at the Auto Parts Store. Here's a link to the fuel filter location and replacement:

The fuel pump replacement is more work and more money. The part costs between $100 and $150 to buy nif your a DIY, or about $650 for parts & labor at a repair shop. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank, so the gas tank will need to be dropped if the pump is to be replaced.

I had a problem similar recently, just wouldn't stay on. Found out that there is a flaw with the sensors on those cars for the ignition "talking" to the computer's Passlock II thing. The car thinks it's getting stolen so it engages the anti-theft which turns off the fuel injection. You just have to reset the Passlock. Turn the key to the first On position where you have radio but no windows, leave it for 10 minutes until the little Security light turns off. Turn off the key then start it.
Don't know if it was your problem, but just so you know, the sensor part will eventually start failing with this car.

check air flow duct where the throttle valve is . check the pvc valve . make sure it isnt stuck open. check the egr valve . it will stick open stall out motor .use a scanner it will tell you if you got egr valve problems. check fuel pressure. it could be stop up fuel filter bad fuel pump fuel pump relay.your car problem sound like a major vacuum leak . change spark plug and wires if they have not been change in a while. it could idle air control. hook a scanner .it could give you a code.

Yeah, likely the cat converter needs to be replaced. But check out that rear O2 sensor first. Also, another good link http://p0420.com

be careful on this problem, this car has a problem on the pas-loc security system,go to www.carcomplaints.com type in 2001 alero wont start.i have this same year our daughter drives.please go and check this sight out .this is not a bad fuel pump. the sec.system is flawed.it thinks the car is being stolen so it is giving a false code which is causing the fuel pump to shut down.this is a problem that gm knew about,if you have a owners man.on this car, look up the pas loc system in it.they tell you how to override it.i hav been dealing with this for years snd may have a fix that will cost nothing..
