2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ - won't shift?

Your dealership is spinning you a year to get you to pay for a new transmission. Tell you husband to get back underneath and look for pulled or damaged wires from the bumper job.

Or call a transmission specialist. This is an electrical fault.

How to synchronize first gear in a 97 xj cherokee

Synchroniser is worn out. Repair requires disassembly of transmission. You can shift more easily with a worn synchro if you match the engine rpms to the transmission input shaft rpms when you shift.
Also could be that it just needs a clutch or clutch adjustment. Check to be sure clutch reservoir has enough fluid.

Change transmission fluide in 1999 Jeep Cherokee

To change the transmission fluid you drop the transmission pan should be about 16 bolts. Once that is off you will see the filter. Buy the kit from a local auto parts store and look to see what the filter looks like. Check your transmission fluid once you drain to see metallic look in it if so i would suggest a transmission flush.

Possible transmission problems on 92 cherokee (xj)

If the Jeep sat for 3 years, u may have brake issues, which is why it won't move when u put it in gear. The brakes may be dragging, or partially seized. U can jack up one wheel at a time, block all other wheels so it won't fall and kill u, w/ trans in neutral try to spin the wheels by hand. If u can't or there is a lot of effort needed, check out the brakes. Calipers and brake cylinders may need to be replaced, and u should also flush out the brake fluid, or your new calipers and brake cylinders will eventually corrode and seize again.
Where is the knocking sound coming from. the engine?
