Sounds like it is going off track whenever it gets to the popping sound point. Or its catching against something, Check to see if anything could be in the tracks of the sunroof. Hope this helps, James Booth. Let me know what happens
if it pops open then its not a fuse, its getting power if it pops open, the common problem with these maximas is that the retract arm that opens sunroof breaks and the only way to repair this is to replace the sunroof track.
got me here to be truthfull ,i would assume that their is a stop shut off switch on the track ,if not open sunroof then with motor out operate the switch to open position and then put the motor in ,
to find out if it is off its track you can remove the cover between the rearview and the sunroof that is the motor/drive assembly. there is a slotted pin in this assemply that you turn with a screwdriver to move the sunroof manually if it wont move manually then you have a bigger issue. sometimes thie drive assembly screws get loose, i believe there are two screws that hold it up,when those are loose you will get a grinding sound when the gears skip. good luck.
It is a rather involved procedure requiring the removal of the headliner and all the related trim work of the interior of your car. If you have never done it before it is quite likely to cost less to take it to a dealership for repair.
You will have to remove the sunroof motor, and the sunroof glass. Then you can move the guide tracks seperately until they are in the closed position. Then you can put the glass and motor back in, remove the power source (fuse or disconnect wire harness) to prevent any accidental opening until you can get it fixed. Chances are that a guide track or cable is broken, this can be a costly fix. Do not take it to the dealership, they will only want to install a whole sunroof unit. Take it to a local shop that installs aftermarket sunroofs
