96 dodge stratus wont start starter clicks doesnt turn over..check engine light flashes 5 times then pauses then flashes 5 times and so on.. ideas???

I would have your battery load tested and check your cable connections at the starter and battery.

A bad battery may show 12 volts, but not be able to put out a big enough current for the starter.

The starter could also be bad and giving you the same symptoms. Sounds like the starter solenoid is probably ok, but the starter motor is what could be bad.

If you are handy, you usually can take starters and batteries out of your car and take them to a local parts store to be tested.

I just replaced our 2007 Xterra battery...it wants to turn over, but won't. Help?

Your starter is bad. you may have to replace it. if the motor "wants" to turn over the starter is recieving power. but it is probably bad.

We have a pt cruiser, a week a go did not start, not even a click, battery good. had it towed to shop. they could not find anything wrong, started every time for them. we drove it for a week,then the same...

Common symptoms of a bad starter is fine starting when it's cold, hard starting when it's a little warm, and no starting when it's hot. The hotter the starter gets, the more power needed for it to crank. If you are experiencing these symptoms, the starter is bad.

After driving a long distance engine will not engage.

This is a classic symptom of a bad starter. When a bad starter is cold, it will start the car but as it heats up, it takes more and more power to make the starter function. If when the car is hot, you still have functioning headlights and other electrical accessories, you are most likely looking at a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this post answers your question.
Best of luck.

I think the starter is bad.

ealsip13;

First, let me ask why you think the starter is bad?

What symptoms do you get when you try to start the engine?

The starter will be located on the lower portion of the engine towards the rear of the engine, right about where the engine connects to the transmission.

Let me know some details and perhaps I can help with the diagnosis
