Hi, What causes a cylinder to misfire? Basically, it's one of three things: loss of spark; the air/fuel mixture is too far out of balance to ignite; or loss of compression. Loss of spark includes anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. Causes include worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad spark plug wires or even a cracked distributor cap. A weak coil or excessive rotor gas inside a distributor would affect all cylinders, not just a single cylinder.

If you find a P0300 random misfire code, it means the misfire is random and is moving around from cylinder to cylinder. The cause here would likely be something that upsets the engine's air/fuel mixture, such as a major vacuum leak, a leaky EGR valve or unusually low fuel pressure (weak pump or faulty pressure regulator).

In the case of a steady misfire, isolating the misfiring cylinder is the first step in diagnosing the problem. The old-fashioned method for finding a weak cylinder is to temporarily disconnect each of the spark plug wires, one at a time, while the engine is idling. When there's no change in the idle speed, then you have pinpointed the weak cylinder.
A power balance test will tell you the same thing, but this requires some hookups and an engine analyzer. A power balance test is preferable to pulling plug wires, because it keeps you away from the voltage and prevents the voltage from causing any damage to the electronics in the ignition system.
When a plug wire is physically disconnected from a spark plug, the high voltage surge from the coil cannot follow its normal path to ground through the plug wire and spark plug, so it passes back through the coil. Most ignition systems are robust enough to withstand such voltage backups intermittently but not on a prolonged basis. If the coil or ignition module is already weak, it may push the component over the brink causing it to fail.

if there is a distributor try to clean may be the corrosion of the distributor, or try to replace new high tension wire.

Engine light flashing whole car shakes and motor sounds like a helacopter..... tested it and it said spark plug 4 misfired........... replaced all 4 spark plugs and it's still reading as a misfired spark...

Sounds like it's either a coil pack or an injector to me, try switching the number four coil pack with any of the other coil packs if the miss follows the coil pack you need to replace that coil pack. if not it's either a fuel injector or a mechanical problem inside the motor, I would rent noid lights from a local auto parts store and look for injector pulse in the cylinder with a misfire, if the noid light is flashing it may be better to leave it to a professional as it is likely internal engine damage. hope that helps. chris

The engine light came on in my 2003 Honda civic LX. My mechanic stated code was misfiring on cylinder 3. He changed the coil pack and reset the engine light. The car still seems to misfire when it is...

If you pull the plug wire from the spark plug on cylinder 3, is there any oil, water, or antifreeze in there? Have you removed the plug to see what condition it is in? If it is black or oil-fouled, you should replace it, or better yet, the entire set of spark plugs. When the coil pack was replaced, was the plug wire replaced as well? I have seen a stuck fuel injector cause your problem before, because the cylinder does not get the right amount of fuel, running either too lean, or too rich.

Misfire in two cylinders

Check to see if the two cylinders misfiring are on the same coil pack. If so, change the coil pack in question.

This happened to me on 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine.

Also, check for a blown head gasket with compression test.

Engine not hitting on two cylinders after replacing cam sensor

If you have a coil pack with 6 cyl. 3 coils in one One coil for 2 cylinders One of the coils in the pack has gone bad. To verify this check which cyliders are missing and see if they match any pair on the coil pack. If so the coil should be replaced. Hope this helped. Moe
