Check the ignition bypass resistor that feeds power to the coil. Sounds like its gone bad.

I have a 1988 Dodge Dynasty that acts like it's vapor locking.

yes fuel pump is dying (it's old ) it will finnaly give up the ghost some day soon then engine won't run at all

common problem pump heats up and shuts off cools off and runs again cyclic

this all assumes you have kept up on changing the fuel filter at reg intervals too

MY 1988 BMWIL 7 SERIES SEDAN WILL NOT STAY IN GEAR

My guess is the screeching sound is the belt slipping. Check the tension and if slack this can be taken up by adjusting the alternator a little bit further out from the engine. The sudden cutting out sounds like a fuel cut-off problem. Check the fuses and the relay to the fuel pump. If all OK, check that the pump is operational and that the in-line fuel filter is not clogged. If fuel still fails to flow you may need to look at having to remove the fuel tank to check that the fuel pick-up pipe in it is clear.

Starting trouble after i let it run out of gas

Sediment from the bottom of the tank could be blocking your fuel filter. Replace your fuel filter.

1988 toyota wont start

If by adding fuel you can get it to run, then it is probably not getting fuel on its own.
