SOURCE: Bouncing fuel gauge

make sure your ground from the sending unit in the tank is good. it is usally rusty a few years from being on the road. you will need to remove it. put a new end on it and reattach it if it is rusty. if it is not rusty you need a new sending unit in the gas tank.

SOURCE: fuel gauge bouncing on 2000 chevy tahoe where is fuel pump relay

I had previously replaced the failing fuel pump on my '98 K2500 when it went out entirely. I was ready to replace my 2000 K3500's fuel gauge as it was acting up.
When I started the engine, the gauge would bounce from the middle to way past full then back. It would also jump sporadically while driving on level ground.
I checked the electrical connections at the tank and made sure the frame ground strap located nearby was making good contact. Nothing changed until I removed the instrument panel and cleaned the connections on the back. The fuel gauge seems to be operating correctly now.
There are videos on YouTube that show how to remove the instrument cluster if in doubt. Mine dash has a pop-in plastic bezel followed by 4 screws to hold the cluster in place. It took about a half hour to inspect & clean the dash connection vs. $250 to replace the pump/sending unit combo. Hope this helps.

Volkswagen Jetta Gas tank full but fuel gauge registers

On my daughter's Golf the fuel gauge also gave an incorrect reading so I removed the fuel gauge sending unit from the tank and cleaned the "rheostat" for lack of the correct name, with some Brasso (cleaning agent for brass and copper ware) and the gauge was working properly again. While there you might want to check if the float itself is not holed, which will allow fuel to enter, causing the float to sink...

Gas gauge bounce

usually this is caused by gas moving around in gas tank and causing float to move around which is what controls the gauge reading. Some have a cove around them to prevent this. Alot of times when someone has the fuel pump replaced they have this problem because float was either bent or not placed in tank properly. hope this helps

ANYONE KNOW WHAT WOULD CAUSE THE FUEL GAUGE IN MY 2001 CHRYLSER SEBRING TO BOUNCE FROM FULL TO EMPTY AND DING THE LOW FUEL LIGHT ON AND OFF? IT JUST KEEPS DOING IT WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING.

  1. Abraded insulation on the fuel gauge sender wire (intermittent short to ground).
  2. Bad fuel level sensor.
  3. Corroded or broken connector in the fuel gauge sender circuit.

Bouncing gas guage on 94 bonneville

could be faulty gauge or sending unit in the tank. if you can get ahold of a scan tool, see if the fuel lvel reading on the scan tool agrees with the gauge. if it does than you have a faulty sending unit.if it does not than you may have a faulty gauge.

My fuel gauge goes to full when i fill it but drops to E when i stop for something 83 ranger 2.3L

Sounds like it is time to replace the sending unit to the fuel gauge in side the tank. It registers until the fuel sloshes around in the tank and the movement causes the float to bounce around and then it shorts out the sending unit so it can 't register. The sending unit has two surfaces that must remain in contact to register. After years of moving around it develops play in the pivot point that causes a gap in the connection and thus a false reading. You will need to remove the fuel tank to accomplish this replacement. Remember be careful if you undertake this task. You will have fuel and vapor in the tank. Empty as much fuel as possible first.
