Maintenance schedule What is the replacement schedule for the timing belt on a 2004 Hyundai Elantra? If I replace the timing belt do I automatically need to replace the water pump. Do I need to do a coolant flush for the system? Thanks, Ed

this sounds like the belt is worn and needs replacing.when its damp and cold if the belt is worn it will slip easier under this condition than in warmer weather.also the belt tension may not be proper.if this has a belt adjuster that you can adjust then the tension may need to be tightened.if it has an automatic belt tensioner(one that adjust tension all the time)like a serpintine belt then the tensioner may need to be replaced as the spring that crates the tension do get weak over time.

If the car has done more that 60000 miles then it is time to change the timing belt and also check on the maintenance schedule of the manufacturer.
The noise of the engine always requires a first hand observation so as to determine the exact fault. Possible that an oil change with checking of all timing/valve settings, replacement of timing chain, tensioner, will reduce the noise.

If your car is auto, I would suggest having the transmission fluid flushed (the fluid is billed as 'lifetime' but changing it is a good idea). The water pump might be something to check too, as these tend to fail sometime after 100k. Also, all lines/hoses, sway bar links and the thrust arm bushings tend to start cracking from age at approx 100,000. You should also change your plugs if they have not yet been done.

Finally, make sure you adhere to the maintenence schedule in your owners manual - ie change all fluids, filters, belts etc at the recommended intervals. Also, I would recommend changing your oil a bit more regularly than the service indicator tells you to - if it were me, I would change it every 5000mi (6000 like you said is also okay).

If you are not very mechanically inclined, timing belt removal and replacement is best left to a professional because misplacement of the crank and cam gear positions can cause the engine to run poorly or even cause damage upon starting the engine.

I have no Idea on the BMW Diesel!... On the 2004 Hyundai Elantra, the belt is replaced every 60,000 mile or every 5 years -- whichever comes first.

Tune up would be done at 60,000 along with a t-belt. coolant and trans sevice should be done at 30,000. t_belt $400.00 tuneup another 180.00

Yes this can be done in place,remove timing belt side engine mounting,lower rear engine mount and front mount and engine can be moved over to leave room to get the plate bolts out that is in front of the timing cover,its awkward but can be done.
