SOURCE: How would I know the ABS is working correctly on my BMW 2001(e39)
find a safe area where there is some sand on the road ot wet leaves or something that will make traction a little less than ideal. drive into it and hit the brake pedel as fast and hard as you can. if the abs works it will activate. it feels different on different systems and i am not sure what bmw does but some will groan very loud, some the brake pedel will push up against your foot some cause the car to pulsate. basically you should feel something unusual in the brakes and it should not do a long hard skid like the cars of the past. you will hear some squeeling but the car will want to resist a constant skid.
SOURCE: How to install front bumper cover on 2001 BMW E39
Installation
of the Molding
Take the Molding Trim whether it is
stock black or painted. Mine is black because my car is a year 2000.
Painted side moldings were done in the year 2001. Snap them into
place.
5 Installation
of the Rubber Gaskets
From the stock bumper, retrieve the upper
rubber gaskets unless you ordered new ones. Simply take a screw
driver and pry a corner off to get you started. Wash thoroughly.
NOTE which one belongs on which side.
Place the rubber gasket on the M5 Front Bumper onto
its appropriate side. Top
The M5 Bumper is now Fully Assembled!!!
Place aside where it can't be damaged.

If you mean the engine coolant fan, then yes most fans will run until the engine cools down to a specific temp.
SOURCE: Where is the Crank Sensor '99 BMW 523i E39 Auto
are you sure you need the crankshaft position sensor changed. it is at the back of the engine i believe, but.....
check for a wet ecu first... read the note on e36...
the ecu compartment is under the windshield on the passenger side on E36
you gain acess to it under the hood....
this compartment gets wet, the ecu lays on a flat surface in that
compartment.
the bottom side of the circuit board gets wet and starts corrosion.
remove the ecu, take the bottom plate off, clean the bottom of the circuit
board with alcohol and a soft tooth brush.
you should be able to see the signs of corrosion or conductive build up.
this gunk bridges solder points doing all sort s of wierd things to your
car, including false sensor readings from asc/abs controllers and other
sensors....
all the way to engine failure and worst case burnt and shorted wiring
harness.
I'm on my 3rd ecu, took me and the repair boys a few years to figure this
one out.
BTW: i would get that ecu mounted above that flat surface, use some sort
of standoff to raise it so that it is not laying in the wet.
SOURCE: change climate control from celsius to Fahrenheit
turn the key so everything is working but the car isn't started. then push and hold the little black button that resets the odo. while holding the button turn the key all the way back to the off. next time you start the car it should switch back to F.
If your temperature reads in climate control reads in degrees Celsius "C" instead of Fahrenheit "F", follow these steps to change to Fahrenheit.
The display should then change to "F". Follow these same steps to change your read-out to Celsius , if preferred.
