Trailer running lights work. turn/brake/hazard do not.
I have the exact same problem.
I towed an old trailer a little while ago with my xterra 05. after doing that, when I tried to tow my bike trailer, I found that none of the lights worked at all.
It turned out that the old trailer had shorts all throughout and blew fuses for my trailer lights.
I found the trailer running lights fuse and replaced that - so now my running lights work. but I can't find out which fuses control circuits for the trailer turn/brake...(no fuses are named). I need a wire diagram to find out what they are.
If anyone has a wire diagram of an 05 xterra - that details the trailer lights circuits - can they send me an email?
thanks
The BCM (Body Control Module) has 2 fuses for the turn signals and brake lights.
The BCM can be found in the footwell area - underneath the steering wheel.I found out what the problem is.

Clearly the fuse blew due to a fault with the trailer electrics and if you intend to use your trailer you should fix the fault before you connect it for a second time.
You mentioned nothing about your car - how the towing electrics are wired? For around 20 years the majority of vehicles have used digital or computerised electrics and if the car manufacturer's towing kit hasn't been used it has been best practice to assume the car is multiplex and fit a multi-relay to drive the trailer lights due to the possibility of expensive and/or difficult to find problems.
Brake lights and direction indicators are usually driven by an ignition circuit and the hazards by a battery circuit - that suggests the way forward is obtaining and studying a wiring diagram...
If the Brake light filaments in the globes are OK then you could have a bad connection some where in the brake light circuit from where the trailer connector cable is tapped into the vehicle wiring loom.
Start by disconnecting the trailer connector and checking on the vehicle socket for an indication that voltage is present by using a multimeter or test lamp while the brake pedal is pressed. If not OK, then the fault is either where the brake light wire is screwed into the socket or the connection in the vehicle wiring loom.
If OK then reconnect trailer plug and after removing cover, check the trailer plug where the brake light wire is screwed into it. If OK, then check where wire is connected at trailer lamps. If not OK, then there is a broken wire in the trailer cable.
Most likely the brown wire from the trailer connector is connected to a constant battery voltage source, and it should be connected to the vehicle running light circuit, however someone might have wired the trailer connector up that way on purpose so that the trailer does not draw power from the vehicle running lights and possibly damage the vehicle running light circuit. (Dodge/Chrysler vehicles do have delicate lighting systems) Here are some images to help assist you, and the 4 way connector is the same as the 5 way connector just without the blue wire for the trailer brakes.
When this happens it is usually a bad earth on the trailer. But hey, check the car also.Check inside the trailer lights for a bad connection. It is an earthing problem.Mate.I hope this helps.
I take it the blinkers and brake lights work ok when not hooked up to the trailer? If yes, then the wiring to the tow hitch is not hooked up correctly. How many wires to trailer pig tail connection? U can have up to 7 depending on what you tow. Check to make sure these wires are hooked up from the truck to tow plug correctly: 7 wired--- brown-Rt turn and brake light, yellow-backup, white-ground, blue-electric brake, green-tail running lights, black-battery charger, red-left turn signal and brake light. Let me know if u have something other than 7 wire, I'll get the wiring color and source info for u.
they are seperate fuses and also has trailer light relay for tow package models , look for trailer light relay fuse , with key on check them all while your there , if fuse is good , swap with another relay , if that will not work , check bulb housing for melted terminals , lastly have body control module ckecked
