The wiring to one of my fuel injectors was cut,i found a 2002 mountaineer and cut the wiring to the same injector and spliced it to my mountaineer and now my engine does not stall anymore when applying the brakes.the question now is why does my engine idle high at every start?sometimes on the highway when coming to a complete stop it will still be idling high and then with in a couple seconds it will return back to normal

SOURCE: engine stalls after cold start-up & release from high speed idle

I had a similar problem.  I found the filter cartridge below the pcv valve had carboned up, and after the crank case pressurized, oil was forced out the pcv supply line to the throttle body.  The idle air control valve solenoid got oil in it and caused my problem, but only when it was cold.  The pcv cartridge is accessed by removing the pcv valve and the rubber fitting that the pcv valve mounts in.  It can then be fished out with a pick set, and it is a pain because you can't see it, but you can get you hand back there.  I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: High engine idle 94 Mercury Cougar

replace throttle body gasket. first check to see if carbon has built up around the throttle valves in throttle body if so remove and clean it with throttle body cleaner.and a old tooth brush. besure to remove all electrical components or any thing that plastic or rubber the cleaner will destroy it.

SOURCE: 1989 Mercury Sable GS 3.0L runs rough and idles down and stalls

Sounds like you might have a stuck open EGR valve. Is the check engine light on. I would replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been replaced, also check the air filter.

My 03 mercury mountaineer truck is shaking and cutting off

2 possible reasons come to mind
problem injectors---dirty tips , low fuel pressures-wiring faulty--ECM or ECM connections
electronic systems --water in distributor cap ( if fitted ) moisture on HT leads or coils -ignition control module ---cam /crank position wiring ----firing order incorrect
try running the fault codes to get a better idea of the causes of the problems

2002 Mercury Mountaineer will not go anymore than 5 miles and hour. It starts and idles fine but seems to get bogged down when the gas is peddle is pressed. Is this a problem with the cat converter?

if your exhaust smells like rotten eggs then yes ,,if not you need new coils and plugs/wires ..My thinking from what you stated is that you have a stopped up fuel filter and injectors need cleaned ..I am 90% sure of the later part

Where is a fuel filter located on a 2002 mercury mountaineer My car is slugish when it is stopped at a stop sign could this help if i change the fuel filter

Here's a step by step, with photos, on how to replace an Explorer fuel filter. The Mountaineer should be exactly the same. The problem you describe can be attributed to the fuel filter. Good luck.

How do you access the spark plugs 2002 mercury mountaineer

IIRC these are a coil over design. meaning the coil is over the plug. the coil should have one 8mm bolt holding it on the lower intake manifold. remove the coild to get to the spark plugs. look by the fuel injectors, coil should be just next to it or very close. coil usually says motorcraft on it and circle in design.

good luck

Engine turns but wont start

check the key that year modle has a chip in the key and if it was around something magnetic it could have lost it's programing. If that is not it the there is a fuel rail with what looks like a air pressure valve. turn the key on and press that valve if fuel sprays out it is your key. If fuel doesn't spray the it is your pump
