Won't start. changed fuel pump and filter, crankshaft sensor, timing belt, ignition switch. Problem began when fuel pump relay went out. someone shorted a wire across it and it worked. (for a while). but it must be removed when you get out or fuel pump keeps running. It started and ran for 10-15 minutes. Then it won't start at all. not getting any spark and fuel pump relay must have a wire jumped across it for the fuel pump to work.
The ECM sends a GND signal to the Fuel Pump relay to switch it ON. When 'jumping' relays, there is a risk that you might feed +12V to Gnd switch line, in this case the ECM line. If left too long, this would blow the diodes in the ECM. Try using another ECM. Try following the ignition circuit from the ignition coil back to the ECM. One of the wires connected to coil should have +12v when IGN on. Sparking only happens when ECM sends GND pulses to the coil. If ECM is OK, check camshaft position sensor, which is also usually referred to by the ECM for ignition firing.

why did you replace the fuel pump if the car was running ok?check if you did not mix up the fuel lines where they connect to the pump.

If there is a problem with the crankshaft sensor then when you attempt to start it the ecm cannot confirm when number one cylinder is on top-dead-center thus not activate the 'open loop' part of the engine controller. I think the reason that it was running fine then would not start was because the only time the crankshaft sensor is used is when starting, not after while in closed loop.

funny thing is I have a 2002 GTI with the exact same problem. have spent the last three days at work trying to figure things out.. best of luckn email me if you figure anything out. [email protected]
