SOURCE: 1999 Cadillac Catera - 103,000 miles - cranks but no fire
Hello carol...from the symptons you describe more than likely it's the CPS (crankshaft position sensor.)
The CPS is a common problem on Cateras with these symptoms.
The sensor is a magnetic impulse type that sends a signal to the computer, the computer then triggers the fire signal. When the CPS gets weak, dirty or has low voltage the intermitten no starts occur. It will finally result in a no start at all...Please be aware that a lot of caddy dealers will and have overcharged customers for this common problem by ill advise and replaceing uneeded componets.
Good luck...i hope this helps and will fixya up.

It sounds like it may be time for a new fuel filter, try replacing the fuel filter first. The filter has a life of 30,000 miles or one year, if it has not been changed, good chance that it's the fuel filter. Take not that a dirty fuel filter will make your fuel pump run hotter and will shorten the life of the fuel pump which is the more costly repair of the two. Good luck and keep me posted, Be glad to help you get your car running 100% again.
SOURCE: cadillac 2004 cts, wont start
i had a 2003 ctc that did the same thing, it wouldn't start or would make a clicking sound and about 1 mth after the problem started aND mechanics could not find a problem my car caught on fire and burned completely from something under the right side of the hood. i had just parked the car and got out, it happened really fast. the fire chief said the cause was unknown????
now i have a 2004 cts and i'm having the same problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! has anyone else had this happen???? please be cautious if your cts is doing this, during the fire my doors locked and had to be pried into by fire chief.

I have had the same problem and I have come to the conclusion it is the security system. After 3 minutes the car will start so there is nothing wrong with the battery or starter. I have had it to the dealer a few times and they cannot solve it. It may be the locks on the doors and they may not be resetting properly. I have learned to live with it.
