My 1993 Plymouth Laser 1.8 Manual Transmission car does not shift in to 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,or Reverse with clutch pressed all the way down when car is ON, But when car is off it does shift in to all the gears. I do not know whether or not it's the whole clutch kit, or if it is the transmission? I just changed out the clutch master cylinder, in your opinion, what is your best experienced educated guess in what to do about this?
SOURCE: clutch/transmission problem
When the car is sitting idling, and the clutch is not depressed,it makes a grinding noise because the input shaft of the transmission is being forced to turn by the clutch, which is engaged, and even though the trans is in neutral, the input shaft is still turning, and this is called "neutral roll over" noise, and some of the assemblies inside the trans are freewheeling around. The noise goes away when the clutch pedal is being depressed down, because the input shaft of the transmission is no longer turning. So it does sound like an internal transmission problem. It is still possible for the throwout bearing to be bad,and it can be checked when the trans is removed from the vehicle,Remove the throwout bearing from the trans input sleeve, and press down on the bearing flange and turn it at the same time.It should feel smooth and free.If it catches or feels gravelly, then the bearing is bad and that could be your noise. Also, turn the input shaft of the trans and same thing,if it's smooth and free or if gravelly feeling......Good luck.

you say the fluid looks good... that's great.
now next time your out drive for about ten good minuetes long enough for the transmission to get nice and warm and then pull over to nice level ground and with the vehicle in park check the fluid again. it's kind of hard to read because it always has a lot of bubbles on it and stuff. but it may be low on fluid.. good-luck ray

I had the same problem in my 1999 plymouth voyager. Changed both speed sensors it started shifting perfectly.. Now i get a little thump when downshifting from 2nd to first when stoping change the sensors there only about 20 dollars each its 2 of them on the front of transmission..

Sounds like you need a solenoid pack to start, and possibly a service. If the tranny is not slipping, the solenoid pack is stuck and not tell it to shift up. Could possibly be a TCM, but not as likely.
A quick learn on the transmission repair is neccessary also the shop needs to check the pinion factor since a solenoid was replaced.
