Well, if you mean the sensor that is located between the second and third spark plug on the DRIVER'S side of the block? That is the coolant gauge sensor.. Interesting, the same part number sensor(WT3000Z) is used by the computer to determine the coolant temperature for starting up - such as fast idle / running operation.. It is located on top of the block behind the coolant inlet hose.. That is the part that gives a lot of the starting problems.. If the radiator becomes low in coolant the part will get extremely hot and destroy itself?.. If you have weird starting problems, just replace it?.. They are cheap.. Here is a picture of the sensor..
You didn't state what engine....assuming a 4.3L and also you may not be identifying the proper side of the engine. Right and left sides of an engine are ALWAYS as viewed from the driver seat (left side of engine is driver side of veh). It sounds like you may be describing the knock sensor.
