My daughter has a 1998 pontiac grand am se. Here lately, when driving it, it stalls sometimes during a turn at intersection, etc. Also, last week, went to a convenience store, killed it, came back out, wouldnt start, would turn over, but no start. 3/4 tank of gas. Pulled it home and every few miles I would try and start it, after 15 miles, and several tries, it started. We unhooked chain, and I drove it in last 20 miles, no problem. Afraid for her to drive it now. At same time, heat gauge and rpm gauge quit., but it started after getting home. Any ideas?
Check vacuum hose going from center of manifold to sensor under the chan. That fixed mine the vacuum hose crumbled in my hands after removal. replaced that and also rubber from chan to throttle body had a tear. Replaced both of these and car does not stall.
I am not sure I can solve your daughter's problem since all are different but my son and I just had a similar problem and a responder said to try the basics. He recommended a GM dealer but we worked it out ourselves.
Clean out the throttle body (body) and clean out the injectors. Change the air filter if it is at all dirty.
The throttle body is covered by a black plastic air channel body (chan). The chan is held in place by a clamp around the tube from the air filter housing. The back of the chan at the top right has two 10mm bolts/screws. Through the body of the chan at the bottom, just left of center, can be seen the screw clamp which holds it to the top of the body to the chan. Under the chan there is a tube which connects to it from some place in the engine. It slides on and off. There are no clamps.
Release clamps and remove air filter tube from chan. Remove two bolts from top right of chan. Release clamp holding chan to body. Pull up and then to your right.
With the chan off, spray the body really good with a throttle body/carburater cleaner. Hold the butterfly valve open and clean the areas where the valve touches the body with a rag soaked in the cleaner. Repeat this process a couple of times until the rag come out reatively clean. Spray again and reassemble.
Put at least one can or bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and fill up.
Our started to run better right away. I hope your daughter's does too.
Let's start with the simple things and replace the fuel filter first and try to get the car scanned at Auto Zone free of charge to find any DTC codes that may be the reason to why the car stalls. Keep me posted, be glad to help.
