if its the 2,8 the pump is on the engine and also feeds the injectors. if you are having problems and having to prime the pump. it could be a blocked filter or the breather for the tank is blocked. also check the none return valve.

check for air in the fuel system
If you did not bleed the system after replacing the filter that will be a fair bet.
