TROUBLE CODE PO402 FOR 2007 SILVERADO 2500HD CLASSIC 6.6 DIESEL

DTC P0402: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Excessive

The engine control module (ECM) tests the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow when the EGR is in operation. EGR desired flow is compared to EGR actual flow. If EGR flow is higher than expected DTC P0402 will set.

Do you know what EGR is ?

I have the code PO401 AND PO402 codes on my 2002 focus, any suggestions?

PO401: EGR insufficient flow detected
PO402: EGR excessive flow detected

A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
The EGR valve is faulty
The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

P0402 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vacuum
  • Solutions
  • With a P0402, it is common for people to replace the EGR valve, only to have the problem return. The most likely solution is to replace the DPFE sensor.
    • Check the voltage at the DPFE sensor both at idle and when the EGR is open
    • Replace the DPFE sensor

I gotta 1997 toyota avalon its running rough i ran a scanner it threw two codes po441 an po402. i need help figuring out wat these codes are

Hi there osborne_shay,

Those codes refer to a problem with the drive train in your Avalon. Here is what the codes mean.

PO441-Evaporated Emission Control System / Incorrect Purge Flow
PO402-Excessive gas flow through the EGR valve

The cause for these issues are either that the components are faulty or they just need to be cleaned.

Obd2 code is po402 exhaust gas recirculation flow detected.

That code P0402 translates into 'EGR flow excessive' which implies that the diaphragm of the EGR valve is probably bad and this would mean that exhaust gases are being drawn into the intake manifold when the engine can't handle them. This would result in poor power at the low end (a least) and higher fuel consumption. Normally at idle, the EGR path from exhaust to intake is blocked so it doesn't gag the engine and is opened when vacuum is higher and the engine is not loaded very much. This controlled intake of exhaust gases is claimed to help burn unburned fuel before reaching the catalytic converter.
By cheating the vacuum line, I pick up a couple of MPG since the engine is not choking on its own garbage.
Illegal? Probably, but I drive little anymore so I suspect Gore's hot air is a greater contributor to 'global warming' than I.
