latch has probably broke internally if you can slam door and dosent close replace latch maybe 15 dollars from a scrap yard and takes about 25 min max tools needed star screw driver and flat blade to take door panel off
The latch needs to be replaced. You may be able to find one at a salvage yard or at a GM dealer. If you are mechanicly inclined you can replace it yourself. If not, I recomend you have it replaced at a shop.
The outside door handle spring is broke ,or the latch spring is broke. The only way to tell is remove the door panel and inspect the rod from the handle to latch. Look for broken spring on handle. I have installed an external spring from the handle rod to latch to keep the rod in the full up position.
i think the clip broke off of the door handle inside of the door panel you have to take the panel off and look it is eather the clip[ broke or the handel is broke inside ,i would take it to a shop unless you have the tools and time to play with it just trying to help
according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also
Are you sure the latch broke? sometime they can freeze up and hang unlatched. The part that latches the door to the striker is "C" shaped. If it is flipped into the latched position with the door open, it won't work. If this is the case, use a screwdriver and pry the latch to the open position while pulling the handle. But if it is broken, yes it can be replaced. Usually torx or allen screws in the end of the door. Pull the door panel off and pop the rods off before you unbolt it though!
sounds like you are the victim of the slim jim. what happened is the clip for linkage either broke or got knocked off. you have to remove door panel and repair/replace clip
