Is there a timing belt or chain.

The 2000 Toyota Corolla will have a timing chain. Earlier models have the Belt. The chain is pretty much maintenance free. When it is time to replace it you will usually start to hear a rattle where the chain is losing tension and is vibrating against the chain guide.

Servicing 2001 Corolla

1998-2008 Corolla has a timing chain. So, your 2001 Corolla does not require a timing belt change, since it does not have one. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. your chain will run over 200000 miles or longer.
