Sounds like the transmission is slipping. though when the tranmission is slipping, all the friction material etc will be circulating through out the whole transmission and torque converter.

The engine revs and rpm go up but wont go faster then 40mph

First thing you should do is check your transmission fluid level. This is a common issue when it comes to high rev, and low acceleration. If its a manual tranny, the clutch could be slipping, is their a burning odor coming from your car?

Grinding noise at high rpm

Have you had fuel pressure tested, as well as exhaust for possible plugged catalytic converter?

I have an 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee v6 2x2 with 170k... I'm having a couple of issues... 1. Occasionally will have trouble with cycling through gears when getting on Hwy causing decreased, sluggish...

I would consider changing the vehicle speed sensor. When they go bad, they can really throw out a lot of bad data to the computer, resulting in unexpected behavior like you're experiencing. They're only around $20-$25. I hope this helps! :)

Won t accelerate

run fault codes as it may be the accelerator position sensor Check the cat converter for failure that is blocking the exhaust pipe.

Power (acceleration) loss at mid-high RPM only

Loss of acceleration, the backpressure noise and such are kinda tell tale signs of that converter having problems, feel the exhaust out of the tailpipe it will be warm normally have someone step on the gas and if its super hot it'd be a step in the right direction.

Engine losses its acceleration when hitting the gas and at higher

It could be a bad fuel filter or even a bad Cat-converter. Hard to say with the limited informaton you gave. I'ld try with the easy thing first and that's change the air and fuel filter first and have a muffler shop check your Cat-Converter. Most muffer shop will do it for free "Midas" Good luck and hope this helps.
