First I suggest a full tune up, including air and fuel filters. If you have already taken care of this, then you maybe overloading or flooding your engine with fuel. If the problem seems worse when you first start the car in the morning and gets slightly better as it warms up then you may have a bad coolant temperature sensor. This is about a $30 part. This sensor adjusts the amount of fuel pumped through your injectors to make up for cold temps much like choking an older vehicle. If it goes out, it sends the ECM a signal that the temp is negative 27 f and so it dumps all the fuel it can on the fire to compensate. A good indicator of this would be poor fuel milage, with this car you should be getting between 27 and 32 mpg. Most mechanics charge about 60 to 90 bucks to change this part.

Take the car to a local Auto Parts Retailer, and have them check the fault codes on your on-board computer. Given the year of your car, it is probably an OBD-2 type computer. They can print out whatever the computer diagnostic says the problem is. I am going to guess the throttle position sensor is to blame since it sounds just like what my sister's Mazda Mommyvan was doing.

Very possibly you have a bad motor mount. Is the engine missing or running smooth but shaky? If it is missing, then it may be plugs, wires, or injectors, if runs fine but shaky, then you may have a bad motor mount.

I am going to guess that the peanut bulb in the knob is burned out.
I had a similar problem with my 2003 4Runner and changed the bulb and it worked fine.
The dealer told me it would take about 8 hours to change the 3 dollar bulb. I looked in my manual and it took me between 5 and 10 minutes tops.
I don't remember what the bulb number is. I do know that I had to get it from a Toyota dealer and not a regular auto parts store.
Hope this helps.

Take it buy Auto Zone when the light is on and get them to check the code for you. I don't know why it would do it while cold and not hot.
