Hello handy randy.
The 3.0 liter engine in your Mazda is classed as an interference engine.
Some are more tolerant than others to bending valves. If it happened on the road it is quite possible damage was done unfortunately.
If you have access to a bore scope it is a quick way to have a look to see if damage was done.
Hope you fare out OK.

well if it is not starting but cranking, it could be the timing belt and timing belt idleidler pulleys, there are three total pulleys. it could be none or some or one. but had that happen to mine and after putting new spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, and battery, finally found out my timing belt was bad plus 2 of the timing belt idler pulleys. once fixed today my car started and is still running.
