Location horn relay on 82 cj7

The horn is located on in the right front fender behind the wheel well.You need to remove the plastic cover around the front part of the wheel well and pull it back enough to see the horn.Remove the wire from the horn and you can use a test light to see if you are getting power to the horn.The ecm(engine control module) is right by the horn so be careful with the wires harness.If you don`t have a test light you can use a piece of wire and hook it to the battery and put power to the horn.It should beep.If not replace the horn.If it does work then you will need to trace the wire back to the relay center under the hood.Hope this helps.Good luck.

The horn relay is in the fuse/relay box under the hood. so the fuse is HOT on both sides? you should hear the horn relay click when pressing on the horn switch. there may be other relays in that fuse box to swap with and see if the horns work, if the relay clicks, its "usually" good, but the contacts may be bad. if the relay clicks, check for power at the horn. DARK GREEN wire, if it has power , then check the black wire, thats the ground. If it has power and ground, but does not work, the horn is bad.

The clicking you hear is the horn relay working.
I would locate the horn and insure the wiring is intact and the horn has a good solid ground.
Then while someone is pressing the horn button measure the voltage at the wire that attaches to the horn to ground. If you get 12v or more the horn is bad. If you don't get any voltage replace the relay

First, always check fuse.
2. If good, use test light at horn with button pressed to see if horn is getting voltage. If yes, replace horn.
3. If no, trace your way back--find horn relay in engine compartment fusebox and listen to see if it clicks when button is pushed. If yes, the wire from the relay to the horn is bad.
4. If no, remove the relay and test the socket for command signal from the horn button. See my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check for how to check relay socket. If command signal is present, replace relay.
5. If not, the problem is with the wiring from the horn button to the relay.

Could be bad horn or relay or the horn'button'.Start at the horn with a test light.Have someone push horn button and check for power at the horn.If no power then trace wires to relay,check for power cominginto relay.If power is going in but not out to horn relay is problem.etc. Some horns have a lttle knob you can turn to adjust them and get them working

If you found two wires, they both attach to the horn pad on the wheel...Unless there is something wrong with the horn or relay, touching them together should make the horn blow. The pad is two separate plates. When you push on the pad the two plates come together and make contact just like touching the wires together. Hot wire the horn to the battery and test it, then check the horn relay if the horn itself works, but touching the wires together or grounding either of them dosen't work..

Diagram should be on the inside of the fuse box or relay cluster lid/cover. If Test light has 1 wire and a sharp tip? Yes, but only if you push the horn button too ;-)

My guess is that the horn lost its ground, but you can check this with the light. The horn only beeps when both GROUND and Pos 12v are present. The horn button gives the relay 12v to close, and the relay gives the horn 12v to operate. The ground is always connected.

Connect tester clipwire to 12v source (battery, headlight (has to be on) and touch its tip to metal of car. Does it light? Good. the tester is working and the 12v is a good source.

Touch one of the 2 horn connection or wires (poke it thru the plastic - why tip is sharp). Does it light? Touch the other, does it?

If both light, (1 will be brighter) we can assume the horn coil is good and it is getting a good ground and I was wrong (it happens... but not often). The side that is BRIGHTER is the ground wire side.

Now have someone mash the horn button. Do you hear a tiny click? That is the horn relay. If not, look for the horn relay fuse and replace it. If you DID hear the click, the relay coil is good and is trying to switch 12v to drive the horn.

Now is time to locate and replace the horn fuse or the relay may have bad contacts. Look at the other relay part numbers in the cluster and see if there is a match for the horn one. Swap it out and try the horn.

Hope this all helps. To 'test' the horn, touch the dim side again anf listen for a scratching sound. That is the 12v going thru the tiny bulb in the tester (a resistance) and trying to drive the horn.

first check fuse, should be hot all times (12v) to see if its blown should be, its in the engine compartment relay box, from there check power to the horn relay on both sides should be red and yellow wires going to it. check the wires for power and the relay, from the relay the wiring will split from the there to the horn one way and to the horn switch the other way,check to see if you have power to the horn, it should read .1-.3 volts then when you have someone push in the horn it will close the relay (if horn switch is working that is) and you will have power to the horn on the power side, if you get power to the horn but it does not sound either the horn is bad or the ground from the horn is bad ,horn is located behind bumper if i remember corectly looks like a black seashell, this is every component in the system and if there is not power to the horn switch then that is where your problem is at and why the relay is not closing to power the horn and give sound. any other question about more indepth wire tracing please feel free to let me know.
