Remove No. 1 spark plug turn engine over till you feel compression on No.1, line up marks on crank pully and timing gear cover , fit distributer making sure rotor points to No. 1 on dist.cap rotate distributer till contacts just start to open .start engine and reset with timing light.
If you have it at #1 on the crank marks, you need to install the distributor so that #1 on the cap lines up with the rotor. I think you have a 350, so #1 is at about 12 o'clock if you view it from the front of the car-see diagram:
Hello
It sounds like this needs a hall affects plate in the distributer, this will need to pull the distributer remove the gear end , slide the shaft out , remove the plate ,, install the new plate put distributer back together install back into motor, set timing hot,
Thanks
Still could be coil or distributer pickup.
Easiest to take each off, one at a time, and take in to have tested at place like Autozone.
When removing distributer, set to TDC first, and mark where rotor pointing on housing, for easier re-install.
If you take a look at the distrubuter you should be able to see it will move back and forward, basically it moves round it needs to be in the correct position or it will frow the timing out and cause the problem.
It is called advance ******. do not touch the distributer when the car is running . it is just a case of adjustment easy fix, have a look for any dirty marks where the old distributer cap sat just put the new one to that position and try it.
Get the number one piston up, Take the spark plug out the first one on the drivers side.Rotate the engine until the piston reaches TDC before it starts to decend back. U can use a screw driver to put in the spark plug hole. The rotor must point towards the number one spark plug. your local library will have this infor or autozone
You may have the distributer a tooth off and the computer can not calibrate the timing properly. Set the engine at (top-dead center) at the crank harmonic balancer and remove dist-cap to see if the "DTC" is off. If so, when distributer is out, you will have to use a longer flat head screw driver to reach down in the intake and turn the oil pump shaft to advance it for the re-installation of the distributer as it will turn when threading into the cam gear. Hope this helps.
the Timing Belt could be a tooth or 2 off or the distributor could be off in angle, you probably will have to have the timing set with a timing light, that will cause pinging and lack of power. most times its juts needing the timing set correctly, it could be just a few degrees out.
turn the engine so the bottom pulley mark is on top dead centre make sure the piston is up check by removing number 1 spark plug remove the distributer cap and refit distributer with rotor button pointing to number 1 on the distributor cap that will fix your problem let me know if you get stuck
