My truck idles high after warming I can get it to idle down by tapping the gas. sometimes when I do this it will idle very high until i can tap the gas just right then it will idle down
Before replacing parts I would recommend checking for vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body very good . sounds like IAC is trying to adjust for vac. problems
I had a 1992 5.2 V8 Dakota,so I looked over my
Factory Service Manual for you
The 3.9 & 5.2 are much the same
At the front of the throttle body is the MAP Sensor
On the drivers side the TPS & at the rear the AIS Motor
Air Idle Speed Motor
My experience once, was with a low idle, I replaced a worn
set of spark plugs, cleaned the rotor & cap & was good to go
That is what I would do & then remove the AIS & try cleaning it
& the port it goes into
I have a Mastertech OBD 1 Scan tool like the GM Tech 2 ,back
in those years,so I could control the idle with it, to test it
Today I just use the scope for TPS & Oxygen Sensors & moved
on the a Notebook Scan Software
I can not see from the manual the screw type, but it appears to be
two screws holding it in & I would guess they are torx, like a T30
maybe
If you can't get it to work or idle replace the AIS
Make sure the cable & throttle shaft etc don't stick
If you have to remove the throttle body & clean it good
SOURCE: Engine Intermittent Stalling and Missing/Loping
***** is correct adn yoru issues are not a quick fix.. some sensor is acting up and /or computer is being told to do something .....get full scope done and dig towards cause that way
SOURCE: idles too high
The throttle position sensor, located on the throttle body, just clean and and test or replace if needed.
SOURCE: will not idle must stay on gas
Not sure what engine but a common cause of stalling is the IAC motor (idle air control motor). I'd grab a spray can of " throttle body cleaner", and pull IAC motor off, clean the pintle (pointed part) well & spray the port it came out of real good to & re-install & try it. If it helps for a while & starts doing it again later, replace the IAC motor.

check throttle position sensor, clean throttle body
Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold and stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
