How many times has it happened? Will it start and run normal now?
Or does it run until the engine gets to normal operating temperature and then die?
If it is still acting like not getting enough gas when you start it, that does sound like a fuel problem -either the fuel pump or the fuel filter.
Have your fuel pressure checked, or try a new fuel filter. To check the fuel pump, you will need to have the fuel pressure checked. If it's not at 50 psi with the key on, not running, probably a bad pump (if you have checked the filter).
If it starts and runs good for a bit and then stalls, that could be a fuel problem or it could be a spark (ignition) problem. You have to start somewhere, so I would say check for a fuel problem first-as you indicated, maybe it isn't getting enough gas-have the fuel pressure checked.

Check the mass airflow sensor had the same problem on my bravada. Disconnect the electrical plug to it and see if that help.

SOURCE: 1989 S10 Blazer acting like its not getting gas.

I had the same problem with my blazer and it took me to completely rebuild the throttle body and put over $300 into the top end, new filter, and it still didn't stop. I finally dropped the tank and started to go through all the proper steps to remove the new fuel pump and i found that the rubber tube from the pump filter to the intake tube had a crack down the middle of it, replaced that and it ran perfectly fine. if that's not the case make certain that you didn't accidentally switch the small fuel lines like i did.(you'll notice that EVERYTHING smells like gas and you'll have fuel draining out of the charcoal cab emissions filter). hope that helps out a little bit!

SOURCE: HELP! HELP! SOMEONE PLEASE ! 2001 chevy blazer fuel problems

I would check to be on the safe side the fuel filter is going in the right direction. The arrow is pointing towards the engine away from the fuel tank, Then you need to make sure the fuel pump wiring connections are good contact and did not come loose when driving.

Car starts and runs for a while then shuts off while running. What could be wrong?

Some fault code or check engine light there? Scanned the computer to know if some is stored.

I suggest to check fuel system (injectors, fuel pump pressure, etc), also air intake sensors and ECT (temperature) sensor.

Keep us updated.

91 oldsmobile custom cruiser will not start, did test and we get spark. The fuel pump continuously run when key is turned. Have replaced fuel pump relay. Next suggestion was to replace ecm fuse - but...

The bigger question here is whether or not the fuel pump is delivering fuel when it runs. Fuel pumps work on pressure. Once the pressure builds up in the fuel lines it will shut off until the pressure drops, then it turns on again. The fact that your pump doesn't turn off suggests that either it's not pumping any fuel out of the tank or it's not building any pressure. First thing to do is make sure there is fuel in the tank. It's possible your fuel guage has stopped working and is giving a false reading.Start looking for gas leaking under the car. A leak that let's the pump run continuously should leave a very visible wet spot. Look at the top of the tank as best you can too. Loosen the fuel line at the throttle body and see if you have pressure there. Maybe it's pouring fuel into the engine and creating a flooding condition. The fact that it runs continuously would suggest the problem isn't the filter. If the filter was plugged it would build pressure. If you can't find anything here I think you are going to have to drop the tank and start looking in there to see why it isn't picking up fuel, possibly replacing the pump. Hope this helps.

Misfires are caused by loss of either spark, gas, or compression. Most likely you have lost gas. Spark is normal? Compression is probably okay. Check your fuel pressure-especially when it has stalled and won't restart.

On hot days when I stop for gas, I shut the car

Fuel pump worn out and is weak, when the fuel is warm the pump expands and the fuel pressure is good. When the colder gas is added or when the gas has cooled down the fuel pump.
The pump can not create enough pressure to run the fuel injector due to the piston and sleeve in the pump are worn out, you might get another year if you lucky by replacing your fuel filer.
Start with the simple and replace your fuel filter and check your fuel pressure readings at the shredder valve on your fuel injector rails. You should have i think 56 PSI to run them properly.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

I dropped the fuel tank to drain old gas.I put new gas in and turned engine to start it didnt start. Should I be able to hear fuel pump if it is working? This is for a 1990 ford e-150 van. Also where the is...

Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine. You should hear the fuel pump running for 5 seconds if working. This primes the gas to the injectors when doing this. If not heard running check the oil pressure switch for the 12 volts needed to run the fuel pump starts there on that harness. When the engine starts and the oil pressure reaches the normal pressure the computer shuts off that circuit and turns on the fuel pump relay to run the pump. The relay stays on till you shut the engine off

91 NISSAN MAXIMA , ran out of gas , and put gas in it and it still wont start ,I heard that the factory anti-theft system will shut car down i that. true ? We can get it started ,checked for spark, no...

if it ran out of gas it just may be air locked, you can't just crank the engine turn the key to the run postion for 3 seconds and shut off and do this 7 or 8 times then try starting it. The fuel pump will not pump while cranking it is a fail safe if the car is in a wreck and the pump won't continue to pump gas out and catch on fire. This should fix it for you.
