It's not a terribly difficult job...Oil pan and anything in the way needs to be removed. Assuming it's an 8cyl, the pump is bolted to the rear main bearing cap. You may need to lift the engine to gain sufficient clearance to get the pan down. Most failures involving the oil pump are not the pump, but low pressure caused by either an obstructed pump screen or worn engine bearings, so make sure you aren't changing the symptom instead of the cause.

I have a 91 gmc sierra, it has 103k original miles. My oil gauge will hold fairly steady at 45 when accelerating. When I set at a light from time to time my gauge will drop and then jump back up to around 20 to 30. when I am constantly giving gas it doesn't do it. It just started doing it in the last day or so. Is it my oil pump?

1992 gmc truck 1500 is making a knocking noise...just bought it dont know where to start 1 fuse was bad replacinv it . . The oil dip stick reads good...it looks like theres not much oil when I pull off...

Check oil pressure.

As a test, you might try a heavier weight oil (SAE 50 diesel) to see if the knock goes away. Just drain and put in 4 to 5 Qts. No need to change filter.

Low price oil pump 92 silverado chev 1500/350/extended cab

Don't skim on a low cost oil pump. I've seen too many failures due to trying to save a few bucks. External parts maybe but NOT INTERNALS. Pay the extra for a good oil pump.
A thumbs up would be greatly appreciated if this answer is helpful to you.

Where is the oil pressure sending unit on a 1987 gmc s15

  • You should have two of them (which went to one in think 1991 or 1992)

  • The sensor by the distributor is for the oil pressure gauge - see pic below.

  • The sensor by the oil filter worked with the fuel pump power circuit see - pic below.

I have a 94 gmc yukon it has oil pressure when its cold but when it warms up it has no oil pressure

engine bearing are most likley wearing out provding you dont have a sensor or oil pump issue.. Fresh oil could help. If it does then most likely its a bearing issue
