There are a few ways that a head gasket can go bad.
1. it can blow between cylinders, which causes rough running.
2. it can blow between water and oil passages, which will either get you engine oil into your radiator or antifreeze into your engine oil. you will be able to see these as light brown froth on the dipstick, or when you open your radiator you will see the froth there too.
3. it can blow from the cylinder to the exterior which will cause rough running again and loud repetative hiss when the engine is running.
4 it could blow from a coolant or oil passage to the exterior, which will cause a coolant or oil leak where the block meets the head.
hope this helps ~ Zach
