that's one of most common bad habits out there that is dangerous to transmissions.... putting it in a gear meant for the opposite direction your vehicle is rolling before the vehicle is stopped.
(not much of a tranny person but for what its worth) if i remember correctly 1st and 3rd are on the same gear or band. you may have either broken it or burned it out.
Doubtful if it will work but if you with to attempted it you can try adjusting your shift linkage. but you would still spin in Drive just it would be the next gear down and on your Dash Reverse would be neutral. I Discovered that on my crown Vic when i couldnt back out of my parking spot at wal mart

my name is michael. You said it will go into 4 low but not into 4 hi. Have you lifted the truck to see if it is operational? Does your 4x4 light come on? Does it grind into either 4 hi or low? you may have a bad frt diff seliniod, try unpluging seleniod and putting into 4wd, if fuse doesnt blow then you know its the seleniod.also take a look at the wiring at the transfer case for any chafed wires,some of these trucks use vaccum also to operate 4wd check the vacuum switches for shorts,ive enclosed a wiring diagram to help you ,hope this helps ,good luck.
