So you wont the rotor point to number one right

When the harmonic balancer is at TDC, the rotor in the distributor should point at #1 spark plug on the distributor cap....If it wont crank there , bring it back to TDC with rotor pointing at #1 again and remove the hold down fork....Lift the distributor out of the block slightly and point the rotor at #8 spark plug...180 degrees and reinstall....it will only drop in 2 places because of oil pump drive....If the vacuum can on the distributor is touching the TBI...stick a long screwdriver in the block and turn the oil pump a little, then reinstall...Make sure firing order is right on the plug wires.....

Depends.
If you have tdc on the number one cylinder, and it is tdc on the compression stroke, then the rotor should be close to cyl one.
A four cycle engine has four up and down strokes, compression, power, exhaust, and so on.
Depending on the make model and year, the firing order could be 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 which would mean the timing chain or the distributor is one cylinder too far advanced if it is pointing to number 8.

Set the crank at the zero degrees point on the pointer scale. look at rotor under the dist. cap. (If on number 4 plug tower, turn crank one revolution and back to zero degrees.) If timing has not jumped, rotor will be directly pointing to number one spark plug tower.

You would put the distributor back in so that the rotor points to the same terminal on the cap the old distributor was pointing to.
If the shaft of the distributor has a notch, you can only put it in two ways with the rotor pointing to two terminals.
If you did not set the crankshaft to TDC before you removed the old dist, you have a 50 percent chance of being in the right position.
The notch on the bottom of the dist keeps you from picking any position other than the right one and the one 180 degrees off.

when the engine is a top dead center on cyl one put the distributor in so the rotor points to the no1 spark plug wire trminal on the cap try that let me know if it helps

Did you place the spark plug wires in the correct order?

The number 6 on the distributer is the base timing mark the rotor needs to point at when on TDC.

Well before you took the old distributor off take notice of rotor button location.If you already removed the old distributor locate number one cylinder and point rotor button to that cylinder. it might have to be done a couple of times to get it just right.

Find the end of the plug wire for cylinder 1. Place the plug wire into the distributor cap. Rotate the Crankshaft until Cylinder #1 is TDC. align the rotor in the distributor cap with plug wire number 1.
