Do the tail lights light up with the flasher or turn signal? The third light in the window is on a seperate circuit. May be a faulty turn signal switch.

Turn signal switch. With you foot on the brake have someone stand behind the car. Wiggle the turn signal lever and see if the the brake lights flicker.

I have a 1998 monte carlo and i think i have the answer. the problem is in the turn signal switch. there is a short or something with the wireing but when you go to brake pull the switch like your turninc on the bright lights but dont click it all the way and when you brake your tail lights should come on when you brake. you have to replace the switch or go into the steering wheel collom and tighten replace or fix whatever is the problem.

I have a 99' monte carlo, and I have the same problem. when i brake, the lights sometimes don't work unless i play with the lever, although the third brake light always works. when i turn my left turn signal on while my foot is on the brake, the right brake light doesn't work. i will try the turn signal switch.

I have a 1998 Monte Carlo and I am having that problem as well. I figured out how to work it one day leaving the hospital while pregnant. Thank goodness no body ever hit me. I don't see why this is not a recall. Too many of these cars have this issue. I work at a auto part store and see it all the time. Its been over 3 years and I'm still driving it with the faulty switch. But now I'm trying to find a easy fix to sell it and don't want to put any more money into it. Any answer's??

96 monte carlo rear window brake light works but not brake lights. tail lights work, blinkers work, replaced brake switch and bulbs still not working

This is a common GM specific problem. Your turn signal switch contains an elaborate networking device that has to cancel brakelights while running a turn light. Often times the ground within the turn signal switch is lost causing your situation. After investigating such other possibilities as fuses and loose grounds it may become necessary to replace the turn signal switch. Thank you, Dana

1998 monte carlo brake lights will not work. Directional light ok and middle rear window brke lights work. Stop light fuse ok.

I have the same problem,it's the switch inside the turn signal assembly.Unfortunately the entire assembly switch and all has to be replaced.
Hope this helps.
